Paul,

OK, I'll bite. What is the preferred DNS server? Or where is it? On your LAN
(hopefully)? You're connecting Kids to Main by cross-over cable, so how does
Kids connect to it?

Kids is using "Knooppunttype . . . . . . . . . . : gemengd {mixed}", which
first broadcasts for resolution, then queries the DNS server.

BTW, Paul, your email address munging may contribute to the spread and success
of email address mining viruses. The address you used above, and the address
you previously used (hart2findid AT yahoo DOT com), are both invalid munges.

Chuck, all the mail adresses I used are fake, but ik will read through your
munging link.
I checked all the hints you gave without success. Although now kids is able
to ping main works as well as ping 192.168.0.1 worked. I already switched
off the prefered DNS server (by filling out blanks) so nou there isn't one,
as isn;t on my laptop. i will read thorugh your kb links to see some hints
there.

thanx

Paul,

"...now kids is able to ping main works as well as ping 192.168.0.1 worked...".

Can you please translate the above into a revision of the test results summary:

From Main (kids Full)

Target Main - OK/OK

Target Kids - NO

Target 192.168.0.1 - OK/OK

Target 192.168.0.3 - NO

From Main (Kids Safe)

Target Main - OK/OK

Target Kids - OK/OK

Target 192.168.0.1 - OK/OK

Target 192.168.0.3 - OK/OK

From Kids (Full)

Target Main - NO

Target Kids - OK/OK

Target 192.168.0.1 - OK/OK

Target 192.168.0.3 - OK/OK

From Kids (Safe)

Target Main - NO

Target Kids - OK/OK

Target 192.168.0.1 - OK/OK

Target 192.168.0.3 - OK/OK

Also, which change did you apply (TCP/IP or Winsock update), and to which
computer? From the pattern of the test results being asymmetrical (see above),
I am guessing at least two problems to be solved. Maybe we have now solved one?

My apologies for needlessly needling you about your email addresses, but not
obviously fake addresses are not a good answer. You are obviously aware of the
dangers of posting one's email address in plaintext on Usenet, but the problem
is the clueless who aren't aware of the dangers. The clueless are also most
likely the ones who fail to protect their computer, so when the worm of the
month arrives in their Inbox, that's one more computer becoming part of the
global botnet / spam distribution network. Which means more spam for all of us.

Chuck: what I found out is the following: when Kids is configured to "obatin
an ip address automatically" it can ping both via ping main and ping
192.168.0.1 both in full and safe mode.
When i set it manually, it can only ping main via its IP address, both in
safe mode and full mode.

Main can ping kids both via its name and IP address when kids is in safe
mode, but cannot ping it at all when it is in safe mode. Pinging kids is not
influenced by the ip address setting on kids.

Paul

Paul,

If Kids is getting an ip address when "Obtain an IP address automatically" is
set, and can then ping Main by name, that's an improvement.

Please publish an updated "ipconfig /all" for both computers.

I do not know what I have done, but I cannot ping main via its name anymore.
also after running winsockxpfix (that's the one I used before). I am close
to formatting the hard disk and reinstalling XP.

Paul,

Better. And each time you do this again you will get better at it.

Please download and run my revised diagnostic, with revised instructions.

Copy the code, precisely as it is keyed, into Notepad. Ensure that Format -
Word Wrap is not checked.
Save the file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents and paste it into
your next post.

Do this from Main and Kids, please.

#######

@echo off
set FullTargets=Kids 192.168.0.105 Main 192.168.0.1
set PingTargets=127.0.0.1
@echo Start diagnosis for %computername% (Targets %FullTargets%) c:\cdiag.txt

Paul,

Better. And each time you do this again you will get better at it.

Please download and run my revised diagnostic, with revised instructions.

Copy the code, precisely as it is keyed, into Notepad. Ensure that
Format -
Word Wrap is not checked.
Save the file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents and paste
it into
your next post.

Do this from Main and Kids, please.

Paul,

We may be looking at a false positive here. There is a difference between name
resolution, which is used by the ping command (resolves Kids to 192.168.0.110),
and resource resolution, which is used by the "net view" command, and by the
Network Neighborhood display in Windows Explorer.

There may also be a problem with the ip address of Kids. It appears that the
ping command gets Kids ip address resolved as 192.168.0.110, from both
computers. But please look at the ipconfig for Kids from your previous post,
and at Kids ip address at that time.

I think that you have at least 2 problems on your LAN. Since you have 2
computers, if you wish to rebuild both from scratch (as you hinted in a previous
post), I will understand. If not, let's see if we can figure out your problems,
one problem at a time. Be aware that, as we make changes during the process of
looking for your problems, we will sometimes appear to be taking a step
backwards. That should be expected.

What I hope for first is consistency. Let's look at the browser situation on
your LAN. The browser subsystem provides resource resolution, such as the
contents of Network Neighborhood.

Make sure the browser service is running on Main. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Then disable
the Computer Browser on Kids.

After you check Main, and disable the browser (if necessary) on Kids, power both
computers off. Power Main on, then Kids, then check the browser status on both,
as described next.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip
http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste into your next post.

Along with the browstat output, please provide an updated ipconfig information
for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste into your next post.

Paul,

This is very interesting. Are you running NWLink IPX or NetBIOS?

Please start by checking the list of items under Local Area Connection
Properties, on Main and Kids. You only need the following items in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Clean up the list, then restart any computer that you change.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see that Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled. Then, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on both computers. Enable Guest with Start - Run -
"cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

On XP Pro, check your Local Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative
Tools) - User Rights Assignment, and look at "Deny access to this computer from
the network". Make sure Guest is not in the list.

Finally, look at registry key [HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value
restrictanonymous, on both computers.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/default.asp?url=/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp
http://www.jsifaq.com/subf/tip2600/rh2625.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/default.asp?url=/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it to the
registry.

Finally, rerun "ipconfig /all" and "browstat status" from each computer again,
and post the results.

Paul,

This is very interesting. Are you running NWLink IPX or NetBIOS?

Please start by checking the list of items under Local Area Connection
Properties, on Main and Kids. You only need the following items in the
list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Clean up the list, then restart any computer that you change.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see that Simple File Sharing (Control
Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled. Then, make sure
that the
Guest account is enabled, on both computers. Enable Guest with Start -
Run -
"cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

On XP Pro, check your Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative
Tools) - User Rights Assignment, and look at "Deny access to this computer
from
the network". Make sure Guest is not in the list.

Finally, look at registry key [HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa],
value
restrictanonymous, on both computers.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/default.asp?url=/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp
http://www.jsifaq.com/subf/tip2600/rh2625.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and
Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but
it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that
might
help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/default.asp?url=/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting
a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename,
and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in
Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a
Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it
to the
registry.

Finally, rerun "ipconfig /all" and "browstat status" from each computer
again,
and post the results.

ping still doesn't work, I did all the changes you proposed, and the
registry setting was ok (value 0 for both PC's)

Paul,

Is that the complete output of each browstat? Did you check the browser on
Main, and disable it on Kids, as I asked you to do? As I said earlier, once we
have consistency (predictability), then it should be easier to see what's really
wrong.

By removing IPX (from how many computers?) we force CMN/FPSMN to use TCP/IP for
file sharing This should make no change to the ping command, which only uses
TCP/IP. Let's see what that does to "net view". Run the updated diagnosis
macro below. Please verify that Kids is still using 192.168.0.105.

Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste it (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please.

@echo off
set FullTargets=Kids 192.168.0.105 Main 192.168.0.1
