Chuck, I thought disabling the browser service at kids was pnly needed once.
You said I had to restart. This switches the service on again. Should I
disable it so it can not start again after restarting the PC?

cheers Paul

Paul,

Is that the complete output of each browstat? Did you check the browser
on
Main, and disable it on Kids, as I asked you to do? As I said earlier,
once we
have consistency (predictability), then it should be easier to see what's
really
wrong.

By removing IPX (from how many computers?) we force CMN/FPSMN to use
TCP/IP for
file sharing This should make no change to the ping command, which only
uses
TCP/IP. Let's see what that does to "net view". Run the updated
diagnosis
macro below. Please verify that Kids is still using 192.168.0.105.

Copy the code, precisely as it is keyed, into Notepad. Ensure that
Format -
Word Wrap is not checked.
Save the file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C)
and paste it (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please.

@echo off
set FullTargets=Kids 192.168.0.105 Main 192.168.0.1

Paul,

If you Stop the browser on Kids, then set Startup type to Disabled, it should
not start again. And the browser needs to be Started on Main, with Startup type
Automatic, too.

By setting both browsers as in the above procedure, shutting both computers

only browser in your domain (workgroup).

Were this a fully working LAN, several of the above steps would be redundant

with each redundant step executed as requested, should give us a clue where your
problems are.

Then let's take a look at the complete browstat status from each. And the
latest diagnostic macro (with ip addresses updated as necessary in the
FullTargets line please).

Ok chuck, when the browser service is disabled on kids,

I get this from browstat at main (switched off the other LAN):

Status for domain MSHOME on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{9CFA8E41-985E-4A03-99E9-C5DB75556299}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master browser name is held by: MAIN
Master browser is running build 2600

And this on kids:

Status for domain MSHOME on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{46085981-1C89-440E-BEC8-6E11701B149C}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

When I do this with my laptop, I get identical results. Only when switching the service back on the 2nd PC, with the laptop I get to see MAIN when browstat runs at the laptop and the other way around. When I switch it on on kids, I get the same browstat result on main as described above.

The ipconfig is now:

main: (identical to what it was)
