Does anyone have any strong recommendations as to which approach to

creating a "classic" start menu? I know there are several options

I am using the free program "Classic Start Menu" from he-

http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

It's really good - been running it for a few weeks now without
problems and its just like the old XP classic menu

But you're trying to fix something that aint broke.

BUT, if you spend a minute to think about it, it isn't a matter of
being broke or not!! I never said it was broke.

It is a matter of personal preferences. I do not like the new style
menu - I prefer the classic one.

You, on the other hand, are quite entitled to prefer the new one.

But you're not the original poster, who doesn't like fixing things that
aint broke. For what it's worth I don't really have a preference but
certainly can't see anything wrong with W7 or XP. Neither are broke - but
W7 is faster.

Depends on your opinion, lack of classic start menu would certainly
prevent (or delay) my installation of Win7, Microsoft should learn to
give people what they want, rather than what *they* think we should have.

Which doesn't explain what is broken or how.

If Sunny doesn't like it, then it is broken to him/her, especially if it can
be changed.

Amen to that. But it happens with everything.

Take IE8 - the main issue with IE7 was security, so MS needed to fix
that with IE8. Fine. But they decided it was necessary to redesign it
and add "Feechas". Now that wouldn't have been so bad if they would have
added one more option - "Make IE8 look and behave like my IE7 setup".
With that, I could have lived with IE8, and maybe slowly changed to its
new ways and appearance. But that option wasn't there, and I couldn't
get it to look like the IE7 I was familiar with. So I uninstalled it.

Now I've got Win7, I've got IE8. I still don't like it, and will install
Firefox or Opera. The latter will also give me a basic email &
newsreader, if I install WLM and don't like it.

I agree with Fred on this- I have IE8 on Win7 and IE7 on XP and don't see
that much difference. The "Add to Favorites" icon is gone, and a new tab
brings up a lot of crap info AFAIC, but other than that, they act the
same for me.

Add to favorites is still there on IE8.

I know, but it doesn't have the little icon next to the Favorites icon. I
have to click on Favorites, Add to Favorites. Not that it's a big deal or
that I'm losing all that valuable "clicking" time, but who knows, that one
extra click may aggravate my arthritis even more :-)

I'm not a doctor, but here's a partial solution to your arthritis problem
(sorry - I forgot we no longer have problems. Arthritis issue.) Click on
the favorites icon on LHS so sidebar is always displayed, and add to
favorites will be always available .

Exactly, I've had the choice of Classic or New start menu on WinXP and
Win2003 (I've very rarely used Vista) and on any machine I'm using for
more than a few minutes, I prefer Classic so that's what I use. On
Win2003R2 servers and Win7 I no longer have the choice and it irks.

I don't expect to be able to avoid upgrading to Win7 for too much
longer, I knew of the payware classicstartmenu etc, but am pleased to
see the FOSS version (also it sounds better than the payware offerings).

Things like lack of toolbars and icons in IE7/IE8 don't bother me as I
mostly use Firefox, though I notice that future firefox versions seem to
be taking their lead from Chrome/IE8, also OpenOffice shows signs of
adopting elements of the ribbon style interface from Office 2007 (shudder).

Blimey that is strange. I got IE8 as soon as it was released and noticed a
few annoying new bars and boxes along the top, but just removed them.
Various bits of software try to get IE8 to have extra parts, and it is
simple to ditch them.

Opera is quite snappy in working but I asked them how to make it
auto-connect and they would not help. Firefox is for people who like
tweaking and adding bits and generally playing around and has loads of twee
annoying words it has adopted to make us love it. I tried it but they are
snooty and insulting in answer to queries. Keep off Chrome unless you want
to be analysed to death.

In about a week I will be using Windows 7 on a new PC replacing my old one
using XP. I expect I will find it a nuisance until I have got the hang of
it like everybody else.
