"Missing Microsoft Security Hotfixes"!
WinXP home, SP2, OE6, IE6
Hello, I ran Belarc Advisor to get my compputer specifications, and found to my horror that it shows 51 "Missing Microsoft Security Hotfixes"!!! I can't understand why since I have automatic updates. How can I find out why this happened and how to fix this matter? Thank you so much for any help! Adela P.S. Is there a forum for windows security or "hotfixes" updates? |

Usually right-click on the icon in the taskbar gives you a choice to do so. Install SP3 by running the downloaded executable. Reboot when requested to do so. Logon and let the machine 'settle' for about 10 minutes. Reboot. Give it 5 minutes after logon to 'settle' - reboot. After that - there will be more updates. Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan... Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates (deselect any others) and install it. Reboot again. If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a time. Rebooting as needed. The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones or "Windows Live" ones for now. I would completely avoid the Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to install Internet Explorer 8 at this time. Seriously - do all that. This is like antibiotics - don't skip a single step, don't quit because you think things will be okay now - go through until the end, until you have done everything given in the order given. "Missing Microsoft Security Hotfixes"!
Hi PA, sorry for my irate response that you'll see on OE forum. )
As to this problem, after Shenan's post I realize that it must be that I refused to install SP3 because I heard/read many users' complaints after they installed it. But if it's that important for security then I guess I'll have to install it. Thanks for crossposting. I'll study the link you gave me here and will see what I can do. Thanks again. Thank you very much Shenan, you made me realize that this is caused probalby
because I refused to install SP3 after hearing/reading many complaints from other users who did install it. But, as I mentioned to PA Bear, if it's indispensable for security reasons, I guess I'll have to do it. Thankd for crossposting too. I also thank you for the extensive instructions to try to fix this, but I wonder, do you think that perhaps it would be easier to install that SP3 after all? Will appreciate your opinion. Thanks again. Adela "Shenan Stanley" wrote in message ... A1. Correct but I'd strongly recommend getting SP3 installed now, in case
you encounter any problems. A2. If you reply to this thread and continue the crosspost to OE General, Windows Update, and WinXP General, your reply will be available in each of the three (3) newsgroups. However, if you've read your reply (or one of mine) in, e.g., OE General, the same post will be marked as Read in the other two (2) newsgroups. So it'd be best to concentrate on one (1) of the newsgroups to avoid any more confusion. Thank you PAB, you're right about installing SP3 now. The links you gave me
about the matter are very useful, i.e., it said for IE6 users to install XPSP3 to cover all updates retroactively, and hope I understood this correctly. One thing worries me is that I may not have enough resources in my RAM and HD, but I'll have to go back to your useful link and find out more carefully, as well as check my resources too. Oh so the answers in the crossposted forums will be the same in all 3? Then I'll remain in this one, although just for my records, do you have the MS windows update forum handy?
