File Associations Changing
I am having problems with file associations. I set an app to be used
with .pdf as an example. It eventually changes to Windows Edge with no input from me. This has also happened with other file types, such as ..jpg. I then change it back and it may stay for some time before changing again. I suspect this may be happening with Windows update, but don't know for sure. Does anyone know how to lock these file associations so they do not change? |

I do not know of any way to "lock" these prefs. However, if it's just a few file types you could export the registry keys and if it happens again it's easy to use the registry files to reset the associations back to where you want them. Start - enter "regedit" (no quotes) - open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Find the desired file extension (e.g. .pdf), right-click, choose export, name the file and save it where you like. If the association later gets stolen just double-click that file and merge it back into the registry. You need to log off, log on, or restart for the change to be in effect. -- Ed Mullen http://edmullen.net/ After Tuesday the calendar says: "WTF" |

You have to go to the do the "default by type" settings AGAIN. This also happened to me as my .pdf was RESET by the 1511 update to use edge. At least the update didn't change my default to use TBird but I think that the browser got reset but not sure. I did a flashplayer "update" from Adobe(?) & had to reset/refresh FF to get rid of an unwanted toolbar placed by FF plugin, mediaconverter which may have done the damage with installing "ask" & chrome even when I selected NO & mediaconverter may have installed the Palikan virus. Finally got rid of Palikan but an entry in autorun still remain even tho unchecked & the directory deleted. Got rid of Chromium also which was installed as default browser. |

WinPatrol will detect when there have been changes in filetype associations. Although their site claims WinPatrol will lockdown the filetype association, actually what it does is monitor for the changes and offer you to undo them (revert to the prior association). The free version does not include an on-access (real-time) scanner but will poll for changes. To make sure you remember what you did when WinPatrol pops up an alert about a change, set all monitors down to 1 minute poll intervals (zero turns them off). That way, you should remember what you did a minute ago that might've changed the filetype associations. |

Every time the OS does a "Service Pack", like the 10586 install recently, some of the system applications will be reinstalled. Say, for example, Microsoft Edge has a PDF preview capability. Or, that the system has a PDF preview application. Then, during the reinstall, their default file association could be applied to your system. I've noticed certain of my other preferences are overridden - my "time until screen saver cuts in" keeps changing back to the default (short) value. And that's caused by the OS reinstalling my video driver over and over again. Windows 10 isn't very good about recognizing user customization, and keeping it. Paul |
