Default Internet access via wired networked XP PC

I have an XP PC with a wired ASDL modem for internet connection (which works
fine)
This is in a wired (Ethernet) home LAN with a Vista PC.

I have run the network wizard on the XP PC.

The Vista PC network map shows the network, including the Residential
gateway device, but will not connect to the internet via the RGD (which has
the correct connection shown). I can still access files and printers across
the network.

I have changed workgroup names to both be WORKGROUP - no joy. Tried
reverting to both as MSHOME, no joy.
Have set Vista network to private, network discovery ON etc as per all
technical advice docs. No joy

Have rerun the network wizard on XP - no joy.

Have added ports 138 UDP, 139 UDP etc to Vista PC (as per a tech advice
doc) still no joy.

Please can someone help - what else do I need to do?
