I never cared enough to learn how, but can't you tell by the information
in the post where someone is posting from? If the two "people" are from
the same city.......

Many USENET news servers remove the posting IP address. Instead,
they have an identifier that the admin of the site uses to figure
out who did what. In some cases, that identifier is unique enough,
that the people out here can use it to search for nym shifters.
But that doesn't always work. So there is no guarantee you can
get enough information to catch a nym shifter. A person could apply
for many accounts, and use a different account for each nym, which would
make the identifier method useless.

It's also possible to completely forge posts anyway. If someone wanted
to pretend to be you, it's technically not impossible for them to do it.
It's all a matter of how clumsy they are, as to whether they'd get away
with it. The worst forgeries are the ones where they just change
the name on the post, and they don't bother fiddling the headers to
match. There was a tool and a particular news server for this purpose,
but I didn't write all this information down, because I'm really not
interested in "101 ways to abuse USENET".

This is why some people took to signing posts with PGP, but that
has also fallen out of favor. At least, I don't see signed messages
as much as I used to. Signing is still used for all sorts of other
things, where proof of who you are is required. A signed message
has cruft like this in it.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----
Version: GnuPG v1.2.6 (GNU/Linux)
....
-----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Ok, I had never really cared much, I just remembered seeing people in
the past saying that such and such was posting from xyz city. I never
really cared about trying to hide of figure out if someone else was so I
never paid much attention to it all. I did used to get a kick out of it
now and then when someone would bring up stuff off the old Deja news
that someone had posted on other boards. Some of the people would get
real mad about it. I never could quite understand it myself. I kind of
figured if you did not other people on group x to know what you posted
on group y, then don't post it. Some really seemed to take it all way
too damn seriously.

Stalking is an issue. That is why you don't want IP addresses left lying around.

And there are always new ways being found, to use IP address information.
Techniques like this, would be useful even with dynamic IP addresses,
because the technique is physical. Of course, it would also require
some cooperation from your home router. (And presumably, you've made
that "stealthy" already.)

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/n...alf-a-mile.ars

Sites like this can help check your level of stealth. In my case, my
home router records a "twinge" attack, invalidating the test results. So I
can never know whether I'm fully stealthy or not (at least, not by using
a test site like this). During a twinge attack, the router may change how
it responds to probes from the Internet, so I can't be certain that a
port scanner would return valid results. If the router never "noticed"
the probes, then I'd tend to trust the results.

Stalking? I think we are talking about a couple different things here.
At least I hope so. What I am talking about was when I first found
Usenet I was posting to a pet birds group. A huge fight broke out
between a couple people. One was a couple and the other a new comer.
Well new guy found Deja and posted where the couple had met on some
"meet and hook-up" board. They got real ****ed. I thought it was funny.
then as I started to post to other boards now and then someone who got
mad at me would bring up something I said on another group. I could have
cared less since everything I put on the other groups was not something
I cared about others finding out about. After all it was now on the web.
As far as anyone finding out where I live, that too was at times
mentioned so it was not a top secret. I don't spend a lot of time
looking out the window for black helicopters so I never really worry
much about it.

Sure, if you use your real name, and leave a "trail" behind you,
it can be used against you later.

It would be like, oh, like using Facebook. What could possibly
go wrong there ?

LOL, guy I think your foil hat is slipping. Used against me? For what?
If someone wants to read what I post on Usenet, they are welcome to
spend all the hours they wish doing so.
Now I do have enough brains to not bad mouth my Boss or such, at least
not any more than I do to his face. As for face book I do have to laugh
when I read about someone calling in sick, then putting pictures of
themselves out having fun. To me this just falls into the no common
sense. If by used against me you mean the "Evil government", again I
could care less. I am often amused by people who really think they are
so important that the government has someone checking up on them. I am
not planning on joining some nut job groups so if they want to track me
they are more than welcome.

TruTV had a documentary titled: "Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura
S02E04 Police State". The government moved in and gave them hell and
said to never mention this ever again. And TruTV never played it or ever
mentioned it ever again. Sounds very much like Nazi Germany (although
more modern) if you ask me.

Pretty lame version of Nazi Germany seeing as it is still available on
http://www.jesseventura.net/conspira...-police-state/ but
I suppose it makes for a great conspiracy theory - wait! Hold on,
that would make a great TV show! And you could create a buzz for it
by "censoring" certain shows to make it look like something was really
going on...

Pretty lame, eh? I don't know about you, but when I hear somebody say no
comment, I automatically don't trust them. And the questions of why does
the government need with hundreds of concentration camps for? And why do
they have tens of thousands of caskets around these camps? And all the
government can say is no comment? Maybe that is good enough for you, but
it isn't for me. They are up to something (and it doesn't look good).

The government has a long history is doing things that were wrong.
Nothing new there. Yet nobody ever goes to jail for their wrongdoing.
And you are okay with that? If so, why? Didn't the government lock up
all of the Japanese Americans during WWII? People used to say that the
Mafia was just a conspiracy theory. As there was no such organization.
There are zillions of such examples. And once you research tens of
thousands of them, you know something is serious wrong and there is no
longer any question about it.

The government has been trying to control the Internet for decades. But
the way the Internet works, it is hard to control. They do have laws in
place that under time of emergency, they can shut the whole thing down.
Which seems odd to me. As in times of emergency this might be the only
way to get needed information out.

Governments does illegal things all of the time (which is odd such they
are the ones who makes up the laws). And sometimes in court they are
found liable. And yet continue to defy the law and nobody goes to jail.
And they act like they are above the law and that is the way it is. And
they are not accountable for their actions. I am sorry, but I don't care
who you are. That is just wrong!

And the thread continues, fed by people who are too damn stupid to read
the title of the newsgroup and too damn rude to realize that putting
