"There was a Marine Sgt. with an M14 at the line and we were face to face
since I was shooting left handed."?

I hope that's a typo - sounds like something from High Noon. :-)

I'm left-eyed and right handed, and shoot from the left
shoulder with rifle and shotgun but right handed for most
handgun. Once, I was shooting in a match with my Remington
40 XB National Match .308 (7.62x51 NATO) off-hand rapid fire
at 200 yards. That requires a reload after 5 shots and the
time limit is 60 seconds. There was a Marine Sgt. with an
M14 at the line and we were face to face since I was
shooting left handed. I would reach over the rifle and work
the bolt with my little finger. I finished my 10 shot
string in about 57 seconds with a score of 47 out of 50-3 X,
(the old target was 5 points with an X tie breaker) and the
Marine scored 40 out of 50, 5X. His officer chewed him out
because he forgot to fire his 9th and 10th shots. Seems he
got confused while watching me shoot left handed.

That became a very effective tactic in gallery shooting with
.22 rifles at 50 feet indoors. I would always try to get a
place on the firing line with the other team's best right
handed shooter. All I had to do was smile at them and
they'd drop a shot.

Is that unfair. Wish I had those target rifles today. Had
to sell them about 30 years ago to pay for a move from Iowa
to Kansas.

they'd drop a shot.

Is that unfair. Wish I had those target rifles today. Had
to sell them about 30 years ago to pay for a move from Iowa
to Kansas.

I do pretty well with straight forward English American
style. English English sometimes causes problems.

I wish I could live those days over, a lot of fun and
friendship going to rifle matches at gun clubs, YMCA's and
other locations all over central Illinois. It was like
bowling without the drinking (no alcohol allowed on the
range).
The standard 50 foot gallery target [.22 LR] had a black
bull's-eye about an inch across with a 10 ring that was
about 0.20 of an inch if I remember. To win you needed to
have all your bullets cutting that ring. The target had 10
bulls for record and a sighter that wasn't scored. You
fired one shot at each bull. We used 15-20 power scopes so
seeing the target wasn't the problem, it was holding still
and having good control of your breath, heart rate and
trigger finger. During practice sessions we who shoot flies
and mosquitoes that landed on our targets. A match had 40
shots for record with 400 possible points. My average was
about 392. They also came out with an International target,
the 10 ring was a dot .008 inches, it was a tougher target.
High power shooting was at 200-600 yards and involved slow
and rapid fire from the four positions.

I'm not into that as sport, but if things got serious I'd
prefer to have the Marines beside me.

I used to do some shooting but it was mostly for my own rating and amusement
on the rifle and pistol range. I never was into the team competitions at
least not as you describe. Nonetheless, I can appreciate your
accomplishment.

So Central Illinois...it seems we share that in common as well, I was born
in Chicago. Lived there until I was 7 years but I still have family there
and we used to go back every year. It's been many years since I've been
back there but I still think of Chicago as home; although, I don't pine for
those winters, especially when it's cold enough to freeze Lake Michigan.:-)
