cannot load word for windows 6.0 files

i am getting this message when attempting to access disk information saved
from my old computer w/ windows 98. i now have windows xp home edition on
new computer. can anybody help. is this a wordpad problem or what?

Exactly what kind of file are you trying to open....Word 6.0, or a later version of
Word document (.doc)?
What program are you using to try to open them....Word or WordPad?

WordPad cannot open .doc files from versions of Word later than version 6.0....to
read them you need either a later version of Word, or the Word Viewer.

This symptom occurs when you try to open the "What's new in Quicken 2003 =

CAUSE
This problem occurs because WordPad does not start as expected. WordPad =
does not start because it is not converting the Microsoft Word document =
to Rich Text Format.
WORKAROUND
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious =
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. =
Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from =
using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem, edit the registry and add the =
EnableLegacyConverters entry with a DWORD value of 1. To do this, follow =
