claws-mail

http://www.claws-mail.org/win32/

It has the best filtering capabilities I have seen in a newsreader.

It also shows HTML posts as plain text.

It's not as easy to setup and use as Thunderbird, but it is worth the
effort to learn how to use it.

Are you really looking for a reader or a provider?

A provider, obviously. He says so in the subject heading and in the post
itself. He doesn't want a free Usenet reader.

I don't know about that. The subject is 'Free usenet reader' and the question asks about 'reader'.

I see nowhere that he used the word provider. As much as he was on a free provider, I think he found one. Of Course
he could be looking for better more full featured free providers.

I'm using Pan News reader with Eternal September. The latter has been
free but I got a notice saying it will no longer be free, so I'll need a
new provider.

I have not heard anything about eternal-september not being free, nor
is there any notice about it on their web site, nor is there any
discussion of it on their support forums. I think you are wrong about
that.

He posted with Agent 6 which is a perfectly good reader, free to
download and use for a 30 trial, then requiring paid registration. If
he already paid for registration in the past, it was released in 2009,
it remains paid for unless he upgrades. Current Agent is 8.

His current provider newsgroupdirect is also commercial, offering
monthly and non-expiring block plans.

He never mention provider, only reader.
