Default Repeated Updates: KB975560 and KB977914: XP home 32 bit

I have lost count of the number of times I have "installed" these but they
keep being offered - groundhog day has nothing on this! Following all of the
steps offered in kb910339 [scan with Malicious Software Removal Tool; scans
with Kaspersky and with Spybot Search and Destroy; installing updates in Safe
mode] to resolve this has not worked: the update still keeps repeating and I
do not feel like paying Microsoft £46 to tell them about their faulty
software. Any other ideas or do I just give up and install Linux instead?
