I have 43 processes running, CPU usage 1-3%, PF usage 541 and a commit charge
of 541M / 1234M. Does this sound OK or do I need to get rid of some
processes? Thank you in advance for any and all help.

Not of the normal range for running processes.

If your figures are based on 512 mb RAM you are starting to rely on using
the pagefile!

This computer has 43 processess running a this time but it does depend on
what they are.

Why are you looking at these details?

Hope this helps.

39 here, but I have disabled a lot of unnecessary services.

46 is quite reasonable.

21 here, and 159M commit charge. But then, I'm a minimalist ;-)

Main issue anyway is not how many are running, but if you have a rogue with
a memory-leak or continuous-loop. One such process can bring the computer to
a crawl.

Also bear in mind that names are not always indicative, it is perfectly
possible to write a malicious process which announces itself as 'explorer' to
avoid suspicion. Looking at where it's running from is more informative.
