Default Chrome problem?

When using Facebook I used to type in "(Y)" and a thumbs up symbol would
be displayed. Now in Chrome 55 I get the following...

http://kowallekfamily.com/temp/2016-12-20_203024.jpg

You might have to look closely in the upper left corner to see the small
image I have uploaded.

What's the gibberish after the thumbs up? It looks like the individual
"(", "Y", and ")" characters typed over each other.

An old version of Firefox displays the thumbs up symbol as it should. So
I'm thinking it is some sort of Chrome issue. Perhaps I accidentally
toggled some sort of Chrome option? Encoding?

Any thoughts?

I don't use Google Chrome (have it installed but don't use it until some
emergency comes up when Firefox won't work).

Did you disable Google Chrome from allowing the download of web fonts?
Lots of sites don't bother creating their own icons so they use someone
else's web fonts (which are small icons), like Google's. Some users,
like me, disable retrieving off-domain web fonts because they can be
used for tracking: the font resource site knows your IP address (you
connect to them to get the web fonts) and where you visited (the site
you visited that then redirects to the web font resource). When web
font retrieval is disabled, you see goofy characters in place of where
the web fonts would show.

I updated Chrome after posting this morning ... all seems to be well
again. Must have been a Chrome hiccup.
