networking the printer/scanner
Greetings all I have a Canon MX870 all in one printer scanner. It got switched to the wife's computer when I got a new (to me) Epson. Which is now dead, and merely awaiting the man with the cart crying "bring out your dead." While I can print to the Canon through her's from my machine, I can't seem to figure out how to get it to scan from here to there (or there to here). As it seems to think it is not connected to the LAN. Umm, it prints? What seems to be the issue? (I had a similar problem with the Epson and _it_ was plugged directly into my machine. Got around that one by "sneaker net"). The printer is not setup "wireless". But I'm open to suggestions. -- pyotr filipivich The question was asked: "Is Hindsight overrated?" In retrospect, it appears to be. |

When you want to scan, you are trying to get data from your wife's computer, which requires different network permissions. You and your wife (on your computers) must grant each other read-write-execute permission relative to the scanner. Unless both computers are in the same room, it might be more convenient for you to scan while operating your wife's computer. Save the results in a shared (again read-write) folder from which you can retrieve the results while operating your own computer. After all, you still have to go to your wife's computer to turn on the scanner and place a document in it. The above is how I setup our home LAN and do scanning. I have an old stand-alone Canon scanner for which I cannot find Windows 7 drivers. The scanner works great on my wife's Windows XP computer. -- David E. You do it all from your PC. I have a MX5420 and LOVE the wi-fi. |

Is the printer plugged into a USB port on her computer ? Does her computer have two LAN ports, and the printer is plugged into the second LAN port (ICS Internet Connection Sharing 192.168.1.1) ? Give some details on the connection method. I'm trying to figure out whether it's "routable" or not. Once you give the info, Char can do the analysis for you :-) Paul |

If the all-in-one device is directly connected to a Windows computer via USB, it's seen by the computer as two separate devices - a printer and a scanner. The printer is sharable so that it appears to other computers on your network as a network printer, but the scanner isn't. If you want to be able to scan from more than one computer, the device *must* be connected to the network router by ethernet or WiFi, and *not* to a single computer by USB. -- Cheers, Roger ____________ Please reply to Newsgroup.
