Default Word (2003) crashes unexpectedly

We tried to copy the entire text in a new blank document and it
works but only for almost 15 minutes.
How can we fix the issue???

When I was setting up a new W10 laptop for my sister, she wanted 2003.
Some internet research revealed, for me, that 2003 was not reliable overall.

My suggestion? Look for a replacement, I think that's the simplest answer.

Try to run it in compatibility mode.ย* To do that, right-click on the
desktop icon for your archaic software and then choose Properties.ย*
Click on Compatibility tab and then look for something like in this pictu

There are people here who have never heard of this wonderful feature in
Windows operating system.

I never expect you to come out with some other solutions here. For you
it may not be reliable but I had, upto two weeks ago office 2003 on this
machine and it worked fine.ย* I have now installed a new HD and so
decided to get rid of all archaic software and buy new versions of
everything.ย* Fresh start for me.

I didn't bother to fart around with workarounds like VMs, compatibility
mode, etc. Just installed a free current office program and moved on.

That you have two versions install may be the problem.

I'd start fresh by uninstalling then all, then doing a disk cleanup.

Otherwise use an alternative such as Free Office

Is the computer otherwise healthy ?

Do a memory test.

Right-click Start : Run : mdsched.exe

Memory DIMMs regularly fail in service.

I recommend doing some sort of test, about once a year,
to see if a problem has come up.

I used to have all sorts of superstitions about brand,
but one day, one of my carefully matched Ballistics sticks,
a chip went nuts and no good data at all would come out of it.

Even if the DIMMs are branded, there are really no
guarantees. The only thing you have to go on is
track record, and whether others see trouble too
with that item, or not.

HTH,
Paul

If all else fails then reinstall 2003.
The last version installed will open doc, xls, etc, but will not open
docx, xlsx, etc, without having the converter installed.
fwiw, I have full 2003, full 2010, and bits of 2013, 2016, and 365
operational without any conflicts on my work machines, although it did
take a bit of modding the registry.

Office 2003 has had itโ€™s day. It is simply not reliable under Win10. I
havenโ€™t had it crash in just 15 minutes, but I _have_ had it crash in an
hour or two, the only way to avoid the crash being to quit all Office apps
completely and then open them again.

My solutions?

1 for those who donโ€™t give a damn about The Ribbon, or who (shudder)
actually like it, a new version of Office, usually 2016. (Microsoft is
playing silly buggers with 2019. Bad Microsoft. No biscuit.)

2 for everyone else, a different office suite or even just a word processor.
LibreOffice and Word Perfect and Mellel and Scrivener exist, after all.

Office 2003 and earlier needs to run in Compatibility Mode on any OS after
Win7!

You can, however, install LibreOffice (LO) or similar software (free or not)
which will open/save any early MSO files that do not contain macros. LO,
however, seems to be problematic saving to the early Excel file formats such
that Excel 2003 complains when attempting to open such files. (Can't speak to
Word files because I don't use Word)

There was a compatibility converter utility available at one time so early MSO
could open/save later file formats; - not sure if still available, though.

As of MSO 2002 (v10) installer, any existing previous versions could be kept
and would run simultaneously without issue. To manually install multiple
versions so they co-exist without issue only requires choosing separate
installation folder locations for each version so the installer creates the
appropriate Registry keys for them. Note that the last version you install will
be the 'default' version (unless it's 365) since its installer modifies the
Registry to make it so. You can run a batch file to reset the Registry for
whichever installed version you want as default; - this must unregister all
existing versions, then reregister your choice. Alternatively, you can run
'Repair' in ControlPanel's Program's and Features. 365, however, persists as
the default version because it 'updates' automatically whenever opened so it
can 'call home' to verify your subscription (and let M$ know your system is
available for data mining).

FWIW
My last XP machine had MSO97, 2k, 2002/3/7 and 2010 installed; - all ran
simultaneously without issue. This Win7 machine runs 2003, 2010, 2013, 2016,
365 without issue. My Win10 machines run 2010, 365 and LO only as I no longer
develop with VBA6 due to compatibility issues involving system DLL changes for
64bit. (2010 and later use VBA7)

For those who don't care for the Office Ribbon, there is an addin available
that puts all the Classic menus/toolbars on a separate Tab. I can speak to the
Excel menus in that they have some nice built-in enhancements over the the MSO
menus. (Since I can do everything Word and PowerPoint do (text, graphics,
tables, charts, slides) in Excel, I can't speak to the menus for either of
those 2 apps)

IMO, you would be better of to upgrade to at least MSO2010 and run the Classic
menus addin while getting familiar with the Office Ribbon. My only objections
to the Ribbon is the amount of screen real estate it takes up when maximized,
and that it shifts the work area down doing so.

Still using 2003 and a note that with each Window 10 feature update any
of your signed VBA in Excel will fail. The fix is start Excel once as
elevated as Administrator then open a worksheet with signed VBA script
and your cert will correctly register. Funny thing though is with the
Word VBA works without issue.
