There is also a few manual ways. I don't know if Malwarebytes and
Superantispyware will work on it. They both have freeware versions you
could try.

KenW

I just downloaded and tried free Malwarebytes. It quarantied some
3982 'threats'. Upon reboot, ATWOLA so far does not seem to exist. So
let us pray........

Thanks for ur help..

JW

For future reference: Add two or three other anti-virus/anti-malware
programs to your arsenal. Run a scan with them every couple of weeks or
so. No one program can shield you from all threats.

Sounds good to me!
JW

Damn it! Its back this AM. Malwarebytes now finds nothing. The free
version that is.
JW

Malwarebytes Free version is just as powerful as the Paid version in
'FINDING' and getting 'RID' of malware already on your computer.
The Paid version has some other advantages such as 'real time' protection,
etc.
I bought a lifetime license for it many years ago and I use it in real time.
BUT, don't just buy it believing that the pd version is more powerful in
finding bad guys.
It is not one of those scam type programs that require you to buy it for it
to do it's work. SuperAntiSpyware Free is also a great program to try, and
the free version will also get rid of what it finds without trying to make
you buy the paid version.
Both Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware have Trial Periods where you get the
full features of the Pro version if you wish to try them. After the trial
period, it just reverts back to the Free version. Both are fairly easily
uninstalled, if you decide to do so.
To me, they are both excellent programs.
Sorry, but I have no info on your particular problem.

Try adwcleaner. Also do a web search for malware cleaner will come
up with many free programs that may work. Malwarebytes find 'new'
malware and may not include 'simple' malware which is fairly easy to
remove.

KenW

You are probably going to an infected site. Watch where you go to.

I don't think so. I get themessage on several sites I chose at

What exactly are you doing, step by step, to produce the issue? Starting
with which program do you use to access your GMail? Is it an email
client, like Thunderbird, or is it a web browser? Do you see the issue
when you create a new email, when you reply to an email, or both?

When you try to navigate to 'https://at.atwola.com' in a web browser, do
you reach the page? It exists, so you should, although it contains no
body.

Do you do torrents ?

Do you use vuze ?

Do you use AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) ?

Do you use LimeWire sp ?

It's possible, depending on your Safe Hex habits, to be
re-infected. Even if those programs were to leave
a "service" running, it could be some sort of malware
in the service that restored whatever the Black Hats want.

So on the one hand, you have the tools people have suggested.
Sometimes the adware or malware is nasty enough, it keeps
restoring itself using some Startup program or a Task Scheduler
entry, or some sort of browser hack (like wedging into the
startup cache on Seamonkey).

But even if the removal tools do a good job, if you use
these network tools that have relatively large attack
surfaces, it's only going to be a matter of time
before the bad stuff comes back.

This is why, if you visit a site like Bleepingcomputer,
the "helper" there will clean up your problem, but when
he spots LimeWire usage, he'll call you out on all the
programs that are known to allow computers to be
infected. Part of the help you get on one of those
removal sites, is help not getting re-infected and
having to come back. Since the removal sites are
always overloaded with work to do, they don't
want "repeat visits" :-)

Reading between the lines because you ignored the questions, it sounds
like you're using a web browser to go to mail.google.com or possibly
www.google.com/mail or similar. That rules out a local adware infection,
so all of the advice you've been given till this evening is moot.
Scanning your PC has been a waste of time for this issue, although it
may have provided other benefits. This is why it's important to be clear
when describing a problem. In this case, you sent everyone on a wild
goose chase.

Check out the advice from KenW. The issue is almost certainly within
your GMail settings, not with your local PC.

Why would a Gmail page refer to such a thing ?

Are you suggesting an incoming mail has a tracking
beacon in it, pointed at ATWOLA ? That's a possibility.

if the OP is sending an email, composed within GMail
in the browser, what opportunity is there for an
ATWOLA reference there ?

The part that I wonder about is why his browser can't reach the site. He

I was thinking maybe his browser was too old. But this
site can fall back to TLS 1.0, which covers old browsers
to some extent.

https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/anal...ola.com&latest

TLS 1.3 No
TLS 1.2 Yes
TLS 1.1 Yes
TLS 1.0 Yes
SSL 3 No

My knee-jerk reaction, is to search the entire hard
drive looking for ATWOLA. But that's from playing
too much Whack-A-Mole. I'm sure how ever this is
getting in, that sort of thing will be obfuscated.

There is also a few manual ways. I don't know if Malwarebytes and
Superantispyware will work on it. They both have freeware versions you
could try.

KenW
I just downloaded and tried free Malwarebytes. It quarantied some
3982 'threats'. Upon reboot, ATWOLA so far does not seem to exist. So
let us pray........

It exists, so you should, although it contains noI
Iget it when I send emails from gmail.com. The emails get sent ok.

Then it says:

Hmm, we can't reach this page.
Try this
Make sure you’ve got the right web address: https://at.atwola.com

Search for what you want

when I try to go there I get the same

Check out the advice from KenW. The issue is almost certainly within
your GMail settings, not with your local PC.

Why would a Gmail page refer to such a thing ?

Are you suggesting an incoming mail has a tracking
beacon in it, pointed at ATWOLA ? That's a possibility.

if the OP is sending an email, composed within GMail
in the browser, what opportunity is there for an
ATWOLA reference there ?

The part that I wonder about is why his browser can't reach the site. He
doesn't seem like the kind of person who adds things to his hosts file,
for example. There are a lot of things he won't say.

Sorry about my ambiguities.

When good old Verizon moved its email processing to AOL, my former
verizon.net emails became handled by:
https://mail.aol.com/webmail-std/en-us/suite

I am getting the Atwola stuff when I send emails from the above.

I have an alternate email address in Gmail. I do not get the Atwola
stuff when I send emails from there.

I do not get the Atwola stuff when I do any other web activities.
I have not yet found the setting suggested by Ken W.

Thank U for your helps.

Wayne,

You cannot "remove Atwola"! It is NOT malware, it is an AOL site
that serves up ads to AOL Mail users, among many others. The
message you see comes from your browser, NOT from AOL or Atwola.
The browser is simply reporting that is has no access to
Atwola-provided ads. That is a GOOD thing, not a bad one. Your
access is blocked, either by a blacklist or by a hosts file or by
an ad blocker of some sort.

So ignore the message and enjoy the respite from ads that the
blocker gives you!

I see the exact same message in AOL Mail that you see because I
too block Atwola, in my case by using a HOSTS file. My only
complaint is that blocking Atwola does not block all ads in AOL
Mail.

That's a whole other kettle of fish. My best advice is to start using an
actual email client, such as Thunderbird. Then you won't have to deal
with atwola or any of the other difficulties that come with trying to
use a web browser as if it were an email client. Web browsers make
terrible email clients. Or rather, web mail interfaces are where the
problems lie.

Start here, perhaps:
https://help.aol.com/articles/verizon-move-to-aol-mail-setting-up-your-new-aol-account-in-a-third-party-email-program-or-mobile-device-imap

I have an alternate email address in Gmail. I do not get the Atwola

Google says atwola is associated with AOL, which made the initial
reports regarding GMail weird, but thanks for clearing that up. It makes
sense now.

I too have and use an alternate email client, namely
EUDORA-Gmail.com.
And with a different email address. And I do not see Atwola there.
Its appearance in the browser scared me.
Shouldn't have.
Thanks guys
