If you are like me and find some operations are easier to do from the
old control panel, and have placed it on the start menu; with 1709 you will have to re-establish the short cut. After the installation of 1709 the short cut under the previous version was no longer functioning. There is different icon ;-) -- 2017: The year we learn to play the great game of Euchre |

At one time, you could run that, then go to the Task Bar and select "Pin To TaskBar" for it and it would be there the next time you boot. That's how I've run my Insider for a while. Paul |

I have used this for as long as win 10 has been around Where do you type control.exe? What did Cortana tell you ? :-) Some things executed via the Cortana search hole, cause a Command Prompt (shell) to launch, and the Command Prompt closes in a split second, so the user cannot view the output. For example, if I type whoami into the Cortana search hole, and run it as the top-most returned entry, I would not expect the Command Prompt window to stick around long enough to read it. However, things with "GUI side effects", can be successfully launched from Cortana search hole. If I do winver that one opens a GUI box with the details. That one is OK to use from Cortana. The control.exe opens the Control Panel dialog, amongst other things. (I think "control" also accepts command line parameters.) In any case, it should open a Control Panel window. And at the same time, put an icon in the Task Bar. And once it does, you can right-click and select "Pin To Taskbar" or whatever. Typing in Cortana search hole, means all your commands are recorded, "for telemetry purposes". If you don't like this, type cmd.exe in the Cortana search hole, and launch a Command Prompt window, and then run your (private) commands from there. If you mis-type an entry in the Cortana search hole, your top-most returned result is likely to be a Bing search. So typing errors (then hitting return in a rush) are recorded on Bing, as well as on Vortex (via telemetry). AFAIK, Command Prompt activity is not logged... but what do I know ? Not much. Windows 10 is not a good platform, to be using the word "privacy" in a raised voice. And I refuse to have to "take a course" to understand how my privacy is being eroded by it. I don't want to have to open up old copies of Mad Magazine and study the Spy versus Spy cartoons, to understand how to run *my* ****ing computer. On previous OSes, you'd use the Run box, which wasn't recorded or telemetered. Try typing "control" in the run box of WinXP, and watch what happens. Paul |

After the installation of 1709 the short cut under the previous version was no longer functioning. There is different icon ;-) I use the local user account shortcut in "Windows System" (waay on the bottom of your start menu; or you can find the actual shortcut in C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows System). This particular shortcut has the added benefit of a jump list of recently used applets when you right click on it when you pin it somewhere. For added convenience, I right click and choose the properties of the shortcut in explorer and set the hotkey to Ctrl+Shift+P. This resulted in a new shortcut being created on upgrade, however, which may be what happened to OP. My hotkeyed shortcut was renamed to Control Panel (1). But the right click jump list is how I get to most features. You can pin applets to that menu. You can set a hotkey for the shortcut. Works great. -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten |

I would say it depends on the date format chosen by a user. Date and time formats can be changed at Control Panel / Region. If you have reason to sort on "Date" I would recommend setting Short date to yyyy-MM-dd |
