You don't actually state, but you imply, that this is _not_ the case on
the 780. Is that so? (Same browser and edition?)

this because of eBay or my computer and can I

No idea ...

resolve this so that I can go back?

.... but one solution, assuming your browser has the facility (Firefox
and Chrome, at least, do), is to - instead of just clicking on an item
to open it - to select (probably from the right-click menu) "open in new
tab". Then, when you want to go back, just close the tab (or select the
last one if you don't want to close the one with the item on it).

Thanks
Robert

eBay now opens an item in a new tab. It does leave the old tab open for
me so that when I close the item it does display the old tab and the
list of items.

Is this what the problem is?

I checked on the 780 and it performs
normally, e.g. It doesn't open a new
tab and it allows me to go back.

whereas, on the 8500 it is opening a
new tab and it doesn't let me go back.

Before it was like the 780 and did let
me go back and I should be able to go
back without closing the tab.

Thoughts, Suggestions,
Robert

Mark,

Is this because of eBay or my computer

A 10-to-1 guess ? Its eBay.

and can I resolve this so that I can go back?

Thats hard to say. You see, what probably happens is that when you press
the "back" button your browser tries to go a page back, but eBay than
presents it with the same contents you just tried to exit from ...

What you could try is to navigate back using the browsers history. In
FireFox thats on the toolbar (at the top). I'm not sure that that is an
easier method though.

Another method is to right-click the problematic link and select "open in a
new tab" -- that is, if there is a link you're following.

the tab is grayed out so there's no real
option and it shouldn't be opening up
another tab in the first place because
it doesn't do so on the 780. I shouldn't
have to find alternate ways of doing this.
It should work as the 780.

however I have another problem.

I thought I was updating FF to 56.0
but all the folders have gone gray on
my sidebar.

https://s25.postimg.org/4ih53w3an/Gray_folders.jpg

Can someone give me a good download for FF
or how to resolve this? 'My documents' folders
aren't affected and still yellow.

Thanks,
Robert

Are the two machines running different versions of Firefox ?

The preference may have "open windows in new tab" or the
like, which is playing up. Or, it could be a browser
design change, where they push their preference over
yours.

You can find any release of Firefox you want, here.

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

For example, the 34MB file here would be a standalone installer.
The 32 bit version of Firefox, runs on both 32 bit and 64 bit
OS installs.

Hello Paul,

I was hoping you'd respond,...

The 8500 is running 56.0 (32 bit)
The 780 is running 55.0.3 (32 bit)

Where do I find preference for 'open
windows in new tabs etc" I did right
click it but it didn't have anything
like that. It had Load Tab, Mute Tab,
Reload Tab, Pin Tab, Close Tab, Reload
all Tabs and the like,..

Hmmmmmm I selected both FF Installer
and FF Set-up and the folders still
are gray? Right now, I'm more concerned
my folders are gray than eBay changes
unless it's my computer.

For example, what is your experience if
you go to eBay and click on an item? Does
it let you go back or do you have it
close the tab? Then I'll if I have a
problem or not.

However the gray folders are a problem
albeit they still function.

Thoughts/suggestions?
Robert

Your picture didn't come through.

Are you able to view the picture you created there ?
Because here the site claims it doesn't exist.

What's interesting, is your postimg started working now too.
They must have had a networking problem earlier.

If you enter "about:config", there are more choices
there than might be obtained in the Preferences panel.

browser.link.open_newwindow (Default 3)

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.link.open_newwindow

1 Open links, that would normally open in a new window,
in the current tab/window.

2 Open links, that would normally open in a new window,
in a new window (Default in Firefox 1.5 and older).

3 Open links, that would normally open in a new window,
in a new tab in the current window (Default in Firefox 2.0+).

Selecting a value of "1" for that, might allow your Ebay problem
to accept the "Back" button perhaps. I'm only offering
that as something to test.

I don't really see as many useful options in "about:config"
as I was expecting.

When you change a setting, write it down somewhere in your
notes file, for later. When you decide you don't like the
change or whatever. While the tool does keep track of
"non-default settings", you're going to need comments
recorded somewhere as to what you were trying to fix.

Note that, if you delete a line in that interface,
it won't come back. There is no un-delete. I made
that mistake once, and it was easy enough to put back
manually. It's cases where you delete something by
accident you weren't even looking at, that would be
difficult to fix.

It's also possible that *adding* a brand new line,
can change the browser behavior. Some settings are
so hidden, you have to add them to the browser, set
the value, to make them work. Those are harder to
figure out.

*******

Your bookmarks sidebar, perhaps you were using this addon ?
I gather this allows using colored icons for folders.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-gb/fir...folder-images/

"Please update for firefox 57"

In the developers reply, to the first review on that page,
the developer says his extension will stop working in
Firefox Version 57. The old way, they might have been
presented as a .xpi the browser loads. Now, all those
have to be re-written as "WebExtensions". And with
technical limitations to that, plus developers not wanting
to have to re-code their extensions, a large number
of customizations will be lost.

I wasn't able to find other references to what
capabilities should exist in the sidebar, or to
the general Bookmarks menu. Sure, you can add
separators, you can add folders, but that's about
all I know about there. And at one time, when this
was "a browser humans could use", we actually
had access to bookmarks.html and could edit the
file and move separators around and fix stuff.
Now, that would be more of a challenge, to even
figure out where the master copy is stored. It
might be in a .jsonlz4 for example.

You sure gave me allot of information!

This is my about config:

http://i66.tinypic.com/149s801.jpg

It sounds pretty iffy testing the 1,2,3
open links, especially if I accidentally
delete something and you know my history.

I have no idea what I was using but I
didn't add or do anything intentionally.
I just noticed the computer wasn't behaving
as usual.

I regularly run scans and they didn't pick
anything up. So and tried to update FF by
going to programs and selecting FF and then
updates but I only have version 56 and the
folders came back gray.

I already uploaded the links you gave me for FF
so it should be working normally, correct?

I thought that the O/S automatically updated?

Again, if you go to ebay, what does your
computer do? Maybe opening another tab is normal
now?

The 780 does have an older version but for now until
I get the ebay question settled I'm not anxious to change it.

The tinypic image above, shows you tried to use
"about:config" in Internet Explorer. That's an IE window.
Firefox is the one that responds to "about:config".
The same command doesn't work in Internet Explorer.

I tried Firefox 57, and clicking a link in an Ebay.com
page, opens that link within the same table. The Back
button works too.

I'm not really demonstrating the Back button here. This
shows my about:config settings for links. I have one
other tab open, and it has my Ebay session in it.
I'm looking at the scalp massager in the tab. If I
were to click that tab, then click Back, it takes
me back to the main Ebay window.

https://s1.postimg.org/7khgjnbpnj/firefox57.gif

In this picture, I'm on the scalp massager page, then
I click the Back button, and I end up on the main Ebay page.

Since I have google open it should show it
but only shows about config? How do I proceed?

Could you please give me a link for FF 57?
Maybe that will solve allot of this.

Thanks,
