Are you aware of QuoteFix? See:

I am, but I find it annoying to have to fix it for each message.
Besides, the filtering function in WLM is awful.

You're assuming that Thunderbird is the one and only application ever
running on that system. That sort of assumes facts not in evidence, as
a lawyer buddy is fond of saying. Without knowing what else is
running, you can't come to a conclusion WRT Thunderbird.

It isn't rocket science. All you have to do and open up the Task Manager
and see what all of the processes are doing with the CPU. I also run
Process Lasso and it logs processes, which ones that hogs the processor.
And both Thunderbird and Firefox are usually the only ones in the log
for days.

So you're confirming that both are bloated pieces of crap.

My temporary fix is to copy and paste to another editor. And it
doesn't matter what other editor, Notepad, WordPad, WordStar,
Word, etc. and the rest shows every keystroke and never drops
characters. Regardless whether Thunderbird is currently frozen or
not. It only happens under Thunderbird and nothing else. So the
solution seems pretty clear to me. Don't use Thunderbird or at
least use another editor and the major problem is gone.

And why don't you ask about this in a Thunderbird news group? The
signs on the door here are Windows XP, 7 and 8.

I have. Last question I posted was why does Firefox v28/29 only
work as a Metro App only on my touch screen machine and not on my
other two non-touch machines? Nobody knows? Many of them also leave
questions and nobody knows anything to help them either. Unless you
have a very simple question that most people know about, nothing is
probably going to happen there.

Anyway I was replying to Char's question concerning Thunderbird.
And this Thunderbird problem even goes back since the beginning.
And apparently if it hasn't been fixed in all of this time, it
probably is never going to be fixed.

I wonder why my install of Thunderbird doesn't do that on five
machines. I have it on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows XP and Linux
Netrunner and it works just fine on all of them. My experience with
the Mozilla Thunderbird news group is that it's inhabited by very
savvy users.

Yes, I have also heard stories like yours before. And if it is true
and I am not saying it is not, then something is different. I use
IMAP, newsgroups, and no POP3 accounts. I also read posts in another
window, some doesn't do that either and just use a pane view to do
so.

As for Mozilla newsgroups, I don't doubt most of them are sawy users.
But some of us only ask questions about the really tough stuff. And
that could be difficult for even the best of them.

Sounds like you don't want a solution. I use imap, POP3, HTML mail and
open new windows to compose or read and don't have your problems. Are
you saying that TB doesn't work properly on all of your 30+ machines?
I would suspect an add on. Have you tried running TB in safe mode?

Oh man! I see what you are trying to do! You are trying to get me
involved to figure out this 8 year old problem that nobody else seems to
yet. Look there are millions of downloads of Thunderbird. And I would
guess there must be at least thousands who are or even more so capable
than I at figuring this out. And I admit, in my younger days I would
have been all over this. Although nowadays, the older I get, the less I
want to be involved. So how old does a guy have to be before he can take
it easy anyway?

Okay here is the log and it is really easy to understand. Every two is a
pair and that is when Thunderbird freezes. I wasn't here during this
time and had Thunderbird (all email accounts deleted and only newsgroups
left on this copy), Firefox (10 tabs opened), Explorer (in a folder that
isn't changing anything), and Word (just idling) opened. And I left them
all minimized.

If Thunderbird weren't minimized, it wouldn't have lower the priority.
But it still would log it saying it was exempt because it was in the
foreground. I see once during this time Firefox tried to hog the CPU for
5 seconds. I am not sure why, everything opened should have been very
static (idling).

Although I can see from the log that whenever Thunderbird is checking
for new messages (every 5 minutes) in newsgroups, Thunderbird is
freezing up for a few seconds. So there you go. Mystery solved. It
probably does it when checking email too.

Other readers often freeze up too when checking the server. But if you
are currently reading or composing, that part isn't being affected at
all during this process. Although Thunderbird is being affected. It is
like Thunderbird is running on one thread. Paul says no it isn't, but
that is sure what it looks like anyway.

Here is the log so everybody can chew on. I have no idea how long a post
can be, so if you don't see my sig at the end, it had gotten clipped.
This post is about 19kb in size.

Well, what else do you have to do ? You've got the
groceries, done the laundry, and now you're sitting
in front of that computer. Shouldn't be hard to figure
out.

Two questions:

1) Where is this log?

I mentioned earlier today that Process Lasso logs applications that want
to misbehave and wants to hog the processor. Process Lasso defaults to
wanting to tame it down so the rest of Windows still operates normally.
But if anything you want Process Lasso to butt out, you can do that too.
Currently I have Process Lasso set to leave Thunderbird alone if it is
in the foreground, otherwise restrict CPU use if it is in the
background. So the time Thunderbird is frozen in that log is a bit
longer than if it was in the foreground (but not by much).

2) Why are you using the portable version? I do not believe that it is
supported by Mozilla.

I actually used both and the only limitation I have found in all of
these years is that the portable version can't import anything from
other programs. Otherwise I never noticed any difference. And I like the
portable version (running it from drive C) is it is so very easy to
backup and restore from. Remember I have 30+ machines, so everything
stays in sync with each other.

Something I don't have TB configured to do. You can use the F5 key to
refresh. Try it without this enabled.

And all of them are checking newsgroups every five minutes simultaneously?

Of course. One never knows when I might post something of enormous
value.

Oh gosh no! I learned my lesson right away from trying it with two at
the same time. What can happen is the server responses with too many
connections and blocks you for X amount of time. While I have lots of
external drives, one is basically used for syncing data among all of
them. And let's say that drive someday fails, no big deal since 30+
machines has copies of them anyway.

And honestly I rarely run more than one of them at a time, but I have
been known to run two or three at a time (not all checking email or
newsgroups though). And I think I would become very bored using just one
or two computers all of the time. That is way too easy. I need to mix
things up and make things a bit more challenging. Changing machines, OS,
applications, etc. works for me. ;-)

As someone who financially supported Mozilla, it disappoints me that
their products have taken a turn for the worse and become bloat. I have
a right to express that fact and my opinion.

That's why I have my alarm set to wake myself up every 5 minutes so I
can get up and check for new messages from you!

I'm in the process of writing a special newsreader that will do that
automatically, and sound a klaxon when you do.

All gui stuff most likely will be bloated to a degree.

It's know as "security". FF has code to save one from "known to be"
malicious sites; also for some unknown reason, FF also claims some
sites are virus generators even if the sites server has a problem.
I installed a couple of Intel utilities that I thought was need for the
mb; found they included "safeguards" from identiy theif of the mb(?).

TB has some code to "save" one from spam; don't know how much code
or how it is done. More likely some inspections of the msg will
trigger a msg as spam; this look to apply to other email apps.

FF must have or "call home" to get a list of "bad" sites or also likely
to have a list of malicious sites as part of the code but still does
some checking of the incoming html for something that will trigger
an adverse reaction.

Even win7 has been dropped into the slow/obnoxious environment as its
security has slowed down all access. e.g. I use explorer to look at at
one of my drives & the selection just sits for a "long" time; drop down
a level to look & win7 sits for many seconds. WHY? Even selecting
a program to run from my desktop folder takes a long time as win7
checks for bots, virus or authorized access by me even if the program
was installed long ago & use somewhat frequently & hasn't been changed.
msft's position now seem to be that everything is infected & must be
sterilized.

I definitely have some sympathy to those who fly to places having
to go thru the TSA security & the long lines! But then all the
consumers' "advocates" demand total guarantee safeguards for all
products used by consumers which lead to more bloat/cost. Wonder
how the new labels will look on goods....

Here's a good source of wakeup sound:

It's called 100 Kaba Gaidi, meaning 100 big(?) bagpipes. Not
Scottish...
