Default Print Spooler Service will not run

After recent security updates installed on 5/9/07, lost my printing
capabilities. Tried to reinstall printer but unable to. Get error message
"Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running."

Tried restarting the print spooler service - did not resolve problem.
Attempted resolutions suggested in previous postings for this problem - did
not resolve problem.
Tried restoring system back to 5/4/07 system restore point. Did not resolve
problem.
Contacted MS, they suggested:
reinstalling spoolsv.exe from system CD - tried this without resolution.
contacting computer vendor - done; they were unable to assist; vendor
referred me back to MS web site to download their spoolsv.exe which I was
unable to locate.

Am (was) using Epson C80 printer in Windows XP Pro SP 2

Default Print Spooler Service will not run

The graphics security fix interferes with some print drivers

GDI security patch

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935843/

Stop 0x0000007F error when you try to print from computers that are running
Windows XP or Windows 2000 and that have GDI security update 925902
installed

Or follow Bruce's instructions to get the spooler running, then see if Epson
has an updated driver

I'm not sure what you are suggesting that I do with the first reference you
gave me. (i.e. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935843/) I don't get any of
those error messages.

I have tried Bruce's suggestions. Specifically, I reinstalled the
spoolsv.ex_ file from my system CD. That did not resolve the problem.

I downloaded and ran the cleanspl.exe and that did not resolve the problem.

Other suggestions?

Basically there was a security change to the graphic system (GDI that
performs printer rendering) which broke some print drivers. This normally
just breaks rendering not the spooler service.

At this point you need to get the spooler working again. The best way is to
remove the Epson driver but you can't do this using the spooler service
since it won't start.
