Win 10 October update pulled
Apparently, the original 1809 October update could delete random files
from your user folder. Not good. It's been pulled. There might be other reasons for it too. IDK. So if you downloaded an iso with the MCT, and haven't yet used it to upgrade (migrate) your OS, it's time to throw that copy away and await further instructions. -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten |

I just did a fairly good check on mine, Ver 1809 17763.1 and all data seems intact, the problem I have is that 7ZIP and Winaero Tweaker would not work properly and had to be reinstalled. There also is a problem with moving pagefile from drive C: to Drive D: I get a message that there is a problem and Windows has created a temporary 16 MB pagefile, this happens on every boot, So I have left it on C: for now. Aside from possible random deletion of use files, which will presumably be fixed before this is rolled out again, what fresh new hell does this update bring to the table? So if you downloaded an iso with the MCT, and haven't yet used it to upgrade (migrate) your OS, it's time to throw that copy away and await further instructions. From what I heard, the problem is triggered if you put your User folder on a drive other than the C-drive. This is a pretty common procedure these days as a lot of people have tiny little SSD boot drives which don't hold a lot of data, and so they put their big data, such as the User folder in a larger hard drive, D-drive. This is not the first time this has happened to Microsoft. I remember the exact same thing happening to me back in the Windows XP days, and then later in the Windows 7 days. I think it always happened during the major upgrades like when they released a new Service Pack too. When it happened to me in the XP days, I grew wise and started backing up. So when it happened again in Windows 7 times, I just had to restore from backups. But this was one of the main reasons why I was very concerned when Microsoft started doing mandatory upgrades, Microsoft always seems to forget about people placing their User folders elsewhere other than the default location. It wasn't as big a deal back then, as SSD's weren't a thing and people moving their user folder to non-default locations was a rare thing, now it's a major thing! Yousuf Khan |

I did not move my user folder so I guess that's why I didn't lose anything. My question is should I use the image I took before updating or not? |

Otherwise, it's useless. |

Hi NIL, the Icon disappeared and some other version was in place, I finally deleted it with Revo uninstaller and downloaded and installed a fresh copy of 18.05. Now its OK again. Rene |

What if for some reason the most recent is corrupt and can't be used?! ... Thus #2. I had two Macrium backups corrupted by bad RAM. The RAM has since been replaced, and the backups are good again. You do want to run the "Verify" once in a while. Even though it cannot detect every possible failure, in my case it paid off. I threw those two backups away, as I don't know of a way to slice up a bad backup and restore the good bits of it. Paul |
