Default Sidebar peoblems

Testing and uninstalling an old gane has unexpectedly removed several
files essential to good functioning of the sidebar and the weather
gadget now gives a Data Error instead of the current weather.

On the internet I found that I should restore the foolowing folder and
files to get the sidebar back to normal:

%localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows sidebar
\cache168522d5-1082-4df2-b2f6-9185c31f9472 [folder with some .xml
files]

%localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows live
\services\cache\config.xml

%localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows sidebar
\settings.ini

Microsoft has discontinued MS Live. I can't find what I need on the web
and I have no access to a second Win 7 system from which to copy what
Iapparently need. Is there anyone who can assist, please?

Unless you have Live in the sidebar somehow, then I don't see why you
would. The author may have had an app in sidebar.

Are you using something like 8 gadget pack? https://8gadgetpack.net/
I did once I jumped to windows 7 since it was dropped after Vista.

If so, I'd just reload it.

Do you mean the weather gadget that came with Windows 7, or some other
one you've installed? I was under the impression that the default one
ceased to work some years ago, due mainly to the server it used being
turned off, I think. (There was a patch someone produced which made it
continue to work for a few months, but eventually that failed too.)

[And yes, I know gadgets allegedly are now considered a security risk.]

And by the way, I found Rainmeter to be a more stable item. It has much
of the same applets in it, clock, shutdown and weather are 3 I use.

clock applet (my words).

As I recall, Microsoft pushed an security "update" that disabled or
removed this feature. Also, there still is a Gadgets Platform but it
changed and has the gadgets run as mini-apps and not within the Sidebar:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...adget-platform
See the "Good Bye Sidebar" section.

The old game doesn't have an executable (.exe) that directly loads the
game? I'm wondering why you need the Sidebar at all just to run the
game. You could add a shortcut to your desktop, or a shortcut in a
toolbar in the Windows taskbar, or use the one under the Start menu.
Presumably you cannot use Start - Games because the old game didn't add
a shortcut there, but you could open Windows Explorer and drag the
executable into the Games folder. That's how I added an old game (The
Dark Mod - a takeoff on the Thief game series): click Start menu,
right-click on the Games entry, drag a shortcut from the desktop into
that window.

It's been too long since I've run Windows 7, so I'm not sure what it's
like there, but I run gadgets on Windows 10 (despite Microsoft's
advice) and they run within a sidebar.

Thanks for your advice, Al.

8Gadgets did not work, same problem, data error. Rainmeter however is
doing its job so many thanks.

The old game never used the sidebar as it dated back to Win 97 days. No
idea why uninstalling it should cause sidebar data errors. Anyway, it
was no good so I uninstalled it - with dire results...
