Default Old programs (sort of)

The other day there was talk of Win10 running older applications that
possibly did not work on win7 or 10

This is slightly related:

I have an old all-in-one printer/scanner designed for XP or Vista

though there are no newer drivers, I did get the Vista driver to work in
Win7.

At any rate, the device needs the drivers provided by the mfg...they are
not built-in to the OS

Plugged it into my Win10 machine and within a couple of minutes it
automatically installed and worked.

Go check the Device Manager entry.

Are the driver files of recent vintage ?
Like, spun just for Win10 ?

While there have been attempts at "Universal Printer Drivers",
I don't know if the same largess applies to scanner functions.

The file dates are old (2003 -2006) so I assume they are the same Vista
drivers I used to get the device working with Win7.

However as long as it works, no one would care.

From a user point of view however it makes things easy as Win10 does
everything automatically.

A user of Win7 (don't know about Win8) would not be able to get the
device working by using the "look on-line" feature....nor would going to
the mfg's website (Dell). Only if one were willing to try a Vista driver
(newest listed) would they get the unit working.

It does, to some extent, apply to scanners.
Viewscan works with many, but not all scanners.
Then there was windows and it's scheme for scanners and cameras.
At one point, I had a scanner working with Windows internal scan/fax,
the OEMs scan fax, and Viewscan. That was a bit complicated, and had
some drawbacks. One of the pluses was that the scanner and send fax
would work over a network. Later Epson all in ones that I now use
have at least "basic" drivers included with windows.
