Default Windows10 has done it again!

Overriding my express command, the OS has rebooted after an overnight
update, severely interrupting my off-peak bulk-downloading programs,
so that I've had to re-set them!
How the devil can I stop this Win10 doing this?

Yesterday I was reconsidering whether to reverse my decision not to
upgrade to windows10. When making that first decision I turned off
updates.
This post has caused me to reconsider my reconsideration and leave things
just the way they are.

How about stopping the updates completely? There is a way to stop
Automatic updates completely but you will need to check for updates
manually or visit Microsoft Forums (or these newsgroups) to know about them.

For *Home Users* of Windows 10, can do this:

1) Open the Run command (Win + R), in it type: services.msc and press enter
2) From the Services list which appears find the Windows Update service
and open it
3) In ‘Startup Type’ (under the ‘General’ tab) change it to ‘Disabled’
4) Restart

Or you could change the settings to *Metered Connection*. this also
works to a certain extent

People on *Professional Version* can change from Group Policy to Notify
when new updates are available.

Unfortunately, the problem of automatic updates won't go away soon until
Microsoft brings back the settings of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (or XP
settings) but this not likely to happen soon.

Unless you have the Pro version of Windows 10 you are pretty much
screwed when it comes to when Windows reboots itself as the Home version
of Windows 10 by design reboots any ole time Microsoft wants it to.

Even those who have the Pro version have had problems with updates
overriding the settings that we are told were designed to allow us to
not reboot, delay reboots, or even not to install updates.

The moving target is now UpdateOrchestrator.

GPEDIT and "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations"
no longer works. (And obviously, that works easiest if you're running
Pro and GPEDIT is already installed.)

https://social.technet.microsoft.com...&prof=required

And I guess this is the direction of the new "rolling update"
model. Think you "fixed" something on Tuesday, it's
busted again on Wednesday.

Welcome to "Whack-A-Mole OS".

You go into Settings, via the Start Menu button. Open Update & Security.
Select Windows Update. Click on Advanced options. Under Choose how
updates are installed, from the drop-down menu box, select "Notify to
schedule retart".

Also, you can click on Choose how updates are delivered. You can turn that
switch to "Off".

There's an option to "Defer Upgrades"... Not recommended, for SO MANY
reasons.

HTH.

He can't read the two line message at the bottom of my posts. It's a
terrible indictment of the education system in some countries. Could you
educate him please because you seem to be the intelligent one around here.

I have to admit that I don't see what the big deal about using HTML is
either.

I think that prat (British term for an incompetent or stupid person) is
using non-standard newsreader on Windows 10. Mind boggles when somebody
using Windows 10 - State of the Art OS but still using old, text-based
newsreader that may or may not comply with latest standards.

Still, this is a text-only newsgroup.

HTML is text, is it not?
