hmmm no takers.
Here is more. These are 500G HDDs
At the time of the crisis, I had two external USB hdds connected to a
sandbox PC which has essentially little more than XP pro running on
it.
I was copying the contents of the WD5000AAKS over to a new Green drive
I just bought after the WD50000AAKS started acting up.

By acting up I mean: this drive was in a USB external enclosure since
I got it a year or so ago, and it got very little usage.
After sitting idle for a few weeks, and getting turned on, this drive
literally shut down Windows and as long as it was 'on'.

The PC to which it was connected would try to boot, and shut down and
try to reboot, etc.
Same when connected to a different machine.
Same if the drive was installed in a new external enclosure.

Got the WD green Drive, and got an RMA for the WD5000AAKS.

Then the WD5000AAKS began working again, and I decided to get as much
data off it as possible and began copying everything over, and when I
would complete copying a folder, I would move it into a been copied
folder on the WD5000AAKS so I wouldn't keep trying to recopy the
files.

At the end of the process, I had one remaining file, that i copied
over then when I attempted to place that last file in my 'been copied
folder' all files disappeared.

on the target drive, all the folders show, and I can open them, but if
I check properties, the drive shows that it is pretty much empty. On
the source drive, as I have already reported, no file/folders appear,
but the properties indicate the drive has all the data still on it.

on the source drive there were two items which had real long numerical
labels. i do not understand what those were, but now am thinking they
were indexes used by the drive to reference the data. I need to be
enlightened and directed as to how to dig out of this mess.

I wish I could help more but if the drives fail when installed into a
different, new USB enclosure then it's got to be the USB port? New
drives, new USB enclosure, same problem? Maybe it's not the drives or
the USB enclosure. Have you tried a different USB cable? Or some type of
Mobo problem with USB ports.

Sorry to be the only "taker" with so little help. 8-)
