Internet Connection Sharing Problem
Hi. I have two machines at home, one (host) connected to the Internet via an ADSL connection. The second machine (client) is connected directly to the host machine by network cable. Connectivity between the two machines is fine but when the client tries to access the Internet there are problems. I enabled the ADSL connection on the host to be shared. The client can ping, telnet, ftp to Internet machines. The client can send emails too. But when I try to browse sites with Internet Explorer, it fails. Also, when I try to read emails it also fails. I switched off the firewall on the host machine and ensured that there is no active firewall on the LAN connection between host and client. Am puzzled now as to what might be causing the problem. I downloaded a utility called WinDump which monitors IP traffic on different network interfaces. Theses trace files are available for anyone who can understand them! Any help appreciated, Stuart. |

On the client, run Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings, and clear all of the boxes. Close and re-open IE and try web access again. How have you specified the POP3 server name in the client's email program? Can you ping that server name? What exactly happens when you try to read email? What is the complete text of the error message? -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
