Computers don't see each other in Workgroup: SP2?

I hope someone can help me out. Got two computers connected to a router
with the router connected to a cable modem. I've got various shares set up
on each sysytem, including a printer. Everything worked fine. I could
browse the network and see the other computer, print on the other system,
and the other computer could see me just fine as well. I obtained SP2. I
like to reinstall WinXP from time to time so I have a clean environment.
It's been ages since I'd done that so I figured with the new service pack
I'd reinstall the WinXP and then install SP2 which I did. The other machine
doesn't have SP2 installed, yet.

Now, I can't get the computers to see each other on the network. The newly
installed computer with SP2 can access the internet just fine, as well as
the router, as well as the other non-sp2 computer. However, neither
computer can see each other. I've double checked everything, such as make
sure both machines are part of the same workgroup, etc. No idea what's
wrong.

Any idea anyone? Do I need to have SP2 on both machines?! I've networked
like this for a long time, never had problems. I can get on the Internet
just fine on teh SP2 system so I doubt it's a driver/hardware issue. Again,
neither system finds each other. Sucks when I have to print something.
I've got to put the file on a disk and take it to the other system now.

The windows firewall is enabled by default in SP2. Try disabling it.

It's off. Heck, I thinking about uninstalling it as a matter of fact. Any
other ideas anyone?

Try the network setup wizard.

This was (fingers crossed) the only problem I had when I installed SP2.
Network Setup wizard didn't fix it. I had to uninstall and re install the
network devices through device manager.

Looks like maybe a browser problem (I'm not talking about Internet Explorer).

From each computer, test shares visibility (use actual name / address of each
computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / exact error displayed in each test (8 tests
total).

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from:
http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip
http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip

Browstat is very small (40K), needs no install, and runs from the command
prompt. Just drop it onto a couple workstations, and run it.

Provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Oh dang it. I got fed up with this and reinstalled everything minus SP2
about 4 hours ago. I wish I would've read this as maybe it would've saved
me some time. Anyway, everything is working great now. I'm not going back
to SP2 on either system unless I have a true reason to do so.
