Default XP can't find modem/lan card

Using XP Home SP1, suddenly my system can't find a known good moden or the
lan card. After physically uninstalling/reinstalling, etc. nothing. One
time the computer recongnized new hardware, installed it but it still says
there is no modem. Sys Mgr shows a modem and a query says the modem is
working properly but when you try to connect it says there is no modem. Any
ideas?

No, but I did make a new connection to no avail. Is that the same thing? If
not, how do you recreate the dialer?
