Discover Bank is telling me that my browser is out of date and I'll be frozen out after October 15, 2019. They also claim that browsers Firefox version 30 and above and Google Chrome version 30 and above are okay. I can't believe that those are newer than my Edge browser. How can I find out what version number my Edge is? I've looked but haven't been able to find it. Thanks in advance for any help. You can go to Settings-Apps and find Microsoft Edge there on the Apps page. Click on Edge and choose "advanced." You'll find the version number there, as well as data usage and permissions. Thank you for introducing me to this part of Settings. I found exactly what I needed. Would that be a different bank site that doesn't complain about you using the latest version of Edge? No. I called Discover customer service and the guy assured me that if was Discover that was behind and that Edge was certainly acceptable. I told him that the writers of the email has wasted both his time and my time by not saying that in their email. They sent you an e-mail about which web browsers their site supports? From your starter post here, I figured the site pushed an alert at you when you connected your web browser to their site. Sending an e-mail about which web browser you use with their site smacks of a scam or severe stupidity. Seems implausible a company would waste the money on an employee to write up bulk e-mails (which does NOT have guaranteed delivery) to all their customers when the site itself should be doing the web browser check. Getting an e-mail supposedly from my bank telling me which web browsers to use at their site (that they contract with someone else to build and maintain) would be, to me, suspicious. None of the banks I've used ever sent me bulk e-mails about how to use their web site, and before now I've not heard of anyone else getting such e-mails except as a phish. It sounds like someone has coded up a script to extract records from the web server (UserAgent), and craft emails based on what is found. Their FAQ page is delightfully free of details. I don't see an entry here that addresses this practice of harassment. They make it seem that browser updating is a "purely arbitrary" activity, which for the user, it is not. https://www.discover.com/credit-card...r-browser.html My government weather site had a better approach, in that they gave a months notice about "switching to TLS 1.2" for no particular reason. But at least you could then spend the time to figure out "which of my browsers does that". Paul |

Sending an e-mail to a customer about a critical change in your services means some users never get the notification. Something like web browser throttling is best served at the server at the time of a connection and providing minimal content (that even something like Netscape 1.0 could render; i.e., just text) notification at that time. The customer would be sure to know about the pending or existing change. I'm not sure the bank's site only cares about web browser versions connecting to it only after a login. Without a login, how would the site know how to equate the UA header to a customer record? More likely the bank sent out a bulk e-mail to all their customers with no regard to which web browsers those customers are using. If you're older, the notice applies to you. If your newer, the notice is wasted postage and paper. I can see them sending postal or e-mail notices about changes to their policies because those affect all their customers. They don't know who is use what web browser, so they just blanketed all the customers. |

Ditch the bank they don't understand software or the internet. I wouldn't trust them. Seems a bit harsh. Looking at their website, they seem an all-American setup packed with chirpy looking people with perfect teeth. What could possibly be wrong? |

It harks back to the bad old days where websites were designed to a browser model (Internet explorer) not to a standard. If they can't do something as simple as that properly I wouldn't trust the rest of it. Looking at their website, they seem an all-American setup packed with chirpy looking people with perfect teeth. At the far right edge of the line that has the address bar are 3 horizontal dots. 3. Left click on the dots, scroll down until you find the Setting option. Left click on Settings. 4. In my installation, the Settings opens to General. If it doesn't for you, left click on the gear icon at the top of vertical row of icons at the left edge of the Settings window. 5. Scroll down to the bottom, and you'll find About this App, which has the version for me. Windows 10 Pro 1903 I get Microsoft Edge 44.18362.329.0 |

Version number of my Edge browser?

If so, based on that article, you're probably using the ChromEdge one or something. As it's a lot harder to do *anything* to the original MSEdge. There is a way to make a shortcut for the original MSEdge, except, you can't edit it. Paul It's the same one I've been using for months. It was the MSoft promo. Regarding the shortcut to Microsoft Edge... see... o *What's the trick in the Microsoft Edge browser - to get the ORIGINAL image URL?* https://alt.comp.os.windows-10.narkive.com/TRgRQ8fg/what-s-the-trick-in-the-microsoft-edge-browser-to-get-the-original-image-url The reason I needed that Edge shortcut is that I maintain WinXP style accordion cascade menus, and therefore, I needed to add the Edge & IE shortcuts to that classic Windows XP style Windows 10 native menu: Start menu browser {edge,ie,firefox, tor, opera, iron, etc.} EDGE o TARGET = %windir%\explorer.exe shell:Appsfolder\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8 bbwe!MicrosoftEdge o STARTIN = %windir% o ICONFROM = %SystemRoot%\System32\SHELL32.dll IE o TARGET = "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" o STARTIN = %windir% o ICONFROM = %ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe -- Usenet works best when people post with purposefully helpful intentions. |
