Greetings Mark,

There could be two reasons for this -- either one or both of you are using routers (or other
UPnP NAT) or one or both of you are using the Internet Connection Firewall.
If a router, you'll need a version of Messenger that supports UPnP file transfer. As such,
you'll need to either upgrade to Windows Messenger 5:
http://tinyurl.com/ohq3
or use MSN Messenger 6:
http://messenger.msn.com/Download

If the Internet Connection Firewall (if you're not sure if its on, be sure to check), you'll
simply need to add the file transfer ports into the firewall. To do so, click Start, then
All Programs, then Accessories, then Communications, then Network Connections. Right-click
your connection, then click Properties. For cable modem/broadband users, your Internet
connection will usually be called Local Area Connection. For dialup, it should be the name
of your Internet Service Provider. Click the Advanced Tab, verify the Internet Connection
Firewall is in fact turned on (if its not, you can stop here), and then click the Settings
tab. Click the Add button and then in the Service Settings, type in the following:

For Description enter Messenger Connection, for Name or IP address enter 127.0.0.1, for both
External and Internal ports enter 6891. Verify TCP is selected and click OK. Now repeat the
last step but change the ports to 6892, 6893, 6894, 6895, 6896, 6897, 6898, 6899, 6900. Yes,
10 (including the first one) will now be selected. Then click OK. You should now be able to
send files.

Hi Jonathan,

I've been through your tutorial @
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/allsteps.aspx?ID=16

It's a very good tutorial ;-)
but it doesn't address my problem ;-(
which is that I'm using Windows 2000,
so I don't have the additional tabs on my "Local Area Connection Properties"
dialogue box...

Is there another means by which I can add/open ports on my sys?

FYI: I'm also behind a "non-UPnP IP restricted NAT" (linksys router)...
using MSN Messenger version 6.1
everything seems to be working, but file transfers are waaaaay too slow.

Any help you can provide will be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you ;-)
