Quick Launch problem
Frequently enough, I lose my QuickLaunch icons (all of them). Can someone
tell me where the setting is to restore them (from a backup)? I have over 140 icons and reconstructing them is a royal nuisance. If I could restore just that part from a backup, life would be a lot simpler. Thanks....... |

Get a second(larger)harddisk and make a ghostimage with Gost2003 on that(compressed). My last one: c8.5GB) to 4.3GB backup. When in trouble:restore disk. when nice and stable: backup disk. I can keep several backup this way, and kill some of the older ones on occasion. |

That is much more involved than necessary, but I find that especially useful for doing incremental Windows installations. Currently I use Partition Manager 2005. You just make a copy(s) of the Windows partition. It's a Windows program that does the work on a reboot. I keep PartitionMagic around as a backup disk manager in case Partition Manager doesn't do a particular task. |

I do that - but my most current Ghost is about a week old.

I have Partition Commander. Plz explain how you use it for this purpose.

Quick Launch problem
I had 8 or 9 sections with QuickLaunch icons in them. These are also gone.
If I restore (as you've described below), will those sections re-appear? Each section has a certain type of QuickLaunch icons in them, i.e. Backup, Graphics, Disk Utilities, etc. "R. Each section has a certain type of QuickLaunch icons in them, i.e. Backup, Graphics, Disk Utilities, etc. Yes as long as you don't go back to BEFORE you created the different layers of icons. In windows 9x we used to delete the shelliconcache file and reboot to rebuild the icons when corrupt. The following maybe helpful. Corrupted Icons If the icons on your desktop are corrupted, you can reset them. Search your system for a file called "IconCache.db". It will be hidden, so you will need to view hidden files to find it. The usual location is Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data. Once you have found it, delete it and reboot. If the system will not let you delete it, reboot in to safe mode and do it from there and then reboot again. When you login again, your icons should be recreated correctly. This is similar to a trick performed on older operating systems where you delete a file called shelliconcache. You can also do it with the TweakUI for Windows XP Powertoy, using the repair icons function. "R. McCarty" wrote in message ... To make incremental copies of your Windows installation with Partition Manager 2005. .... install it .... make your Windows XP partition smaller than half of the available space .... copy it to the free space .... make sure the copy is hidden after the reboot... right-click on the target partition and select "unhide" then right-click on the same target partition and select "hide"... that sounds redundant, but if I don't do that, after the reboot the copy is incorrectly visible to Windows Note: I always change the Partition Manager setting so that copied partitions are supposedly hidden. But maybe the program gets confused that way. Maybe leaving that setting alone so that it does not hide the copied partition will allow you to just right-click and select "hide" after you make/plan/setup the copy. In any case, I have to change that attribute at least once in order for the copied partition to be set to hidden during the reboot process. .... once you have a solid backup copy of Windows, you can shrink that partition and move it to the right on the disk so your current Windows can be enlarged Thanks.... You're welcome. Please post in context next time, in other words post below the text you are replying to, like I'm doing. Good luck. |

Next time I'll try this - but, if I understand correctly, this is for the
