can I do this?
"FireBrick" wrote in message ... I have a spare computer. I would like to connect it to my home LAN but I can't run another cat cable from the router to it. Can I put a second nic card in a nearby computer and then run a cat cable from it to this additional computer. presently have 4 computers on the LAN, all can see and share. I wish to add an additional computer by connecting it to an existing computer. Thanks in advance. ----------------------------------------------------- No one ever says, "It's only a game" when their team is winning. ----------------------------------------------------- Bill H. in Chicagoland I take it you have a 4 port hub and it's full. I would just buy a cheep hub to add to the system. You can get one for just a little more than the nic. |

I have spare NICs, what I don't have, as I said in my message, is a way to
run another cat cable to where I want to place this computer. "Nick Burns" wrote in message ... "FireBrick" wrote in message ... I have a spare computer. I'm not sure 'WHY' I can't run the cable is important to my question.
but Cat cable was run inside the wall during construction. I really don't wish to drill holes is 'WHY' I can't run another cable. The Wireless Hub is a good idea but would cost more than a nic (which I already have) and a short cable (which I already have). Now if you think it's not a good idea because it would work poorly, degrade performance on the other computers, or not at all, thanks for the info. I'll explore alternatives then. Well, it would have been helpful for us to know *why* you can't run a cable, such as location, etc. and without those details, the suggestion to just buy a bigger router/hub was a good one. I don't think your idea of running crossover cable from one computer to another in your setup is a good idea. What about exploring a wireless solution? You can add a wireless access point to your current wired network and get a wireless NIC for the box to be added. If this still doesn't help, then give us a few more details to work with. I can understand the not wanting to run cables. for a
while I had 2 computer connected via cross-over in pretty much what you want to do. Only draw back I had was that the computer I was connected to had to be on. i didn't have any system slowdown or problems otherwise. Hope this helps Barry -----Original Message----- I'm not sure 'WHY' I can't run the cable is important to my question. but Cat cable was run inside the wall during construction. Hooking up via x-over cable is possible, but it means you have to mess with the software set-up and the intermediate PC must be powered on to allow the additional PC to connect. A better solution as was suggested earlier, is adding a cheap hub and a couple of patch leads. Currently you have: Router--------------PC1 I suggest you add the hub and do this: Router--------------hub-----PC1 |------PC2 The hub-router connection needs to be a cross-over link; many hubs and routers have this built-in. In the worst case you may need to use a x-over adaptor. -- BRG === http://www.brgservices.co.uk/ |
