Is there more than one 7-Zip ?

My 7-Zip About
-------------------------
7-Zip 16.04
2016-10-04
Copyright(c) 1999-2016 Igor Pavlov

Button for www.7-zip.org

---------------------------
I select files in explorer.
I right-click for menu and select
7-Zip
Add to Archive

It all goes into a .7z file.

But if I open the Zip
Open archive (Explorer right-click menu)

I see the contents but no way to encrypt or set encryption.
The
Add
button says
Operation is not supported.

I'm not sure what the deal is with that button, but it doesn't work for me
either.

Drag and drop in 7zFM works to add files. As for encryption, it seems that
adding files to an existing archive will encrypt them only if the archive
has encrypted file names, which forces you to enter the password to view the
contents -- no encrypted file names, files aren't added encrypted. This
precludes .zip files, which don't support that feature.

If you want to add files to an encrypted archive, it looks like your best
bet might be to extract the archive to a temp location, add the file there,
then create a new archive.

You're a bit off-topic since 7-Zip isn't exclusively for XP or W7. I'd
suggest alt.comp.freeware.

Anyway, if you rightclick file Z7-Zip Add to archive

You should get this window:

Yes, there is a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version.

(A) This is the point where you set encryption.
After clicking "Add to Archive" but before clicking "OK".

It all goes into a .7z file.

But if I open the Zip
Open archive (Explorer right-click menu)

I see the contents but no way to encrypt or set encryption.

(B) You have gone past the point where you set encryption.

Go back to (A) above and do it again.

The
Add
button says
Operation is not supported.

(C) The "+" (Add) button is not for adding files to the archive you opened.
The "+" (Add) button is for when you are using 7-Zip as a file manager to
view ordinary hard drive folders and files on your hard drive.

To add files to an open Zip file, use drag and drop. Drag files from
Windows Explorer and drop them onto 7-Zip.

You need to open the 7-Zip-File-Manager. See this pictu

You cannot change encryption AFTER you create an archive. You need to
specify encryption is enabled WHEN you create the archive.

Instead of adding to an archive which was not encrypted when created,
create a new archive at which time you can elect to encrypt it.
"Adding" to a new archive is creating a new archive and when you can
elect encryption.

Once you've created an archive that is unencrypted, it is too late to
encrypt it. You will have to create a new archive and transfer files
from the unencrypted archive to the encrypted archive, and then
[securely] delete the old archive. Or you could create a new archive
with encryption enabled and then store the unencrypted archive's file
into the encrypted archive (which effects double compression on the
stored unencrypted archive file but gains you little).

For encryption, I only trust the OpenPGP method. I zip files with 7Zip
and then use PGP to encrypt the result. (PGP is one of two major
OpenPGP applications; the other is Gnu Privacy Guard [GPG].)

For PGP, I do not trust any version later than 10.1.2. The source code
of that version was made available for externanl examination to check
for backdoors and other vulnerabilities. I do not know if any later
version was so examined.

President Trump now denies there are any tapes that
recorded his conversations with ex-FBI Director Comey.
Between when Trump hinted there might be such tapes
and his denial, there was sufficient time to destroy
any tapes.

And the older version 9.20, also available on the 7-Zip download page.
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

And over 80 versions on SourceForge:
