I originally had a data partition, one where I'd formatted NTFS with 32K clusters, instead of 4K clusters. I didn't even think about it at the time, and did a Win10 install (apparently without the partition being reformatted) right into that partition.... Why would the installer worry about the cluster size? Files don't care, do they? NTFS compression and encryption don't work unless the cluster size is the default 4KB. But why that should affect the install, I couldn't begin to guess. Especially as it had worked for so many Insider updates previous to that. I presume a utility like "compact" would throw an error if you tried to use it on a 32KB cluster NTFS partition. The utility "cleanmgr", for one of its tick boxes, decides to NTFS compress some files in winsxs. That's an example of where there might be a dependency. But would an OS installer run cleanmgr ? I hope not. compact /? Compact is an evil piece of crap, because the person who wrote it, neglected to preserve all the properties of the file being compacted. Which means that everyone else who needs to use it, has to do a lot of extra work to tidy up afterwards. Like, if a file is owned by TrustedInstaller, if I run Compact, it ends up being owned by me. This is not typically what you expect of such a transformation. You just want the thing compressed, not "ruined". Paul |

wrote in article Well in about 4 hours I had the system up and running and reinstalled his 4 or 5 major programs, The little programs and utilities he could install at his leisure. So what seemed a gargantuan job wasn't half as bad as anticipated and he now has a faster cleaner system without all that Win 7 and 8 cruft dragging along. HTH Rene I think "cruft" is the keyword here... This machine was upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10. The upgrade wasn't terrible but wasn't without some issues, mostly having to do with drivers, USB3 in particular. Once I got past that it went smoothly. Now I'm wondering if something (cruft!) left over from that is causing my troubles. (I say that because I also have a laptop that went from 7-10 and am having similar trouble updating it 'tho the symptoms are different and I think I have a handle on what's wrong.) I have a lot more than 4 or 5 major programs that I depend on, so from- scratch looks daunting. I may try it though since I too have full-system backups that can undo any mess I make pretty quickly. Thanks Jason |

Have you tried to rename your SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution-old? To do this, _*disable Windows Update from the Services App*_ and then go to: C;:\Windows\ Look for SoftwareDistribution folder and just rename it. Now _*go back to Services App and enable Windows Update. *_ Then restart the machine and voila all your outstanding updates will install without problems. You also have to worry about today's updates (November 14th Updates) If this doesn't work then clearly you'll need to pay somebody to fix your machine. You may not have the necessary skills or tenacity to handle this. -- With over 500 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |
