Getting Windows 8 for $40 and now Windows 10 for free. Easy to
understand why, because Microsoft is under humongous reverse pressure
from ultraportable PCs and their operating systems. But I have a feeling
it's going to effect more than the price of Windows.

This reminds me of the big Microsoft antitrust trial prior to 2000.
That's when Windows XP came out and ended the crappy consumer versions
of Windows power users had to restart several times during the day. This
huge pressure on Microsoft could result in another major improvement of
quality. No more sitting on its hands, at least for a while.

Time to upgrade. For me, much earlier than usual. I didn't even use
Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Even newbie computer users should know that software doesn't necessarily
follow the rule "you get what you pay for" since its replication cost is
practically zero. Macrium Reflect is worth as much as any operating
system it can run on and it's free. Again... Microsoft is desperately
trying to hold onto its desktop software monopoly. That's the reason
it's giving away Windows 10. Just like when it was desperately defending
itself in court just prior to 2000, a much improved operating system was
the result. But this time its fighting market forces that are more than
just the whim of some judges. This could mean serious fun for real PC
users.

And here we have sage advice from the self-proclaimed problem providing
sewer of UseNet...

I'm still on WinXPsp2. I have never performed a single upgrade and
have no plans to upgrade until the hardware dies.

Why not service pack 3? And why are you here?

Admittedly, Windows XP was the first and apparently last Microsoft
Windows that took Windows seriously. But hopefully that will change.

Taking a look at Windows 10... I am impressed that Microsoft is making
Windows look worse than ever before. Now there are even fewer theme
customization options than there were in Windows 8/7/Vista. Windows
borders look like ****. Fortunately, if you are using a high contrast
color scheme, you can repair most of the damage simply by copying the
Colors folder from the Windows 8 registry. But forget about gradient
title bars.

Strangely, nowadays Microsoft apparently thinks that a cool desktop
background picture is all it takes to make Windows look okay. Microsoft
should change the name to something other than "Windows" if it's going
to destroy the look and feel of Windows. But hopefully appearance
customization of the desktop will come back to Microsoft as it struggles
for its life against ultraportable PCs. Or maybe it will just die. Time
will tell.

Next up, I will see what Microsoft has done for speech recognition in
Windows. Google has already made their speech recognition practically on
par with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, at least for short phrase dictation.
If Microsoft wants to combat ultraportable PCs, it's going to have to
improve Windows for desktop users. There are plenty of innovations
Microsoft should have been doing all along. They are already happening
on ultraportable PCs. If Microsoft doesn't see those things by now, it's
dead.

You missed out on W7. Great OS. So far I'm unimpressed by W10 by
comparison. It's getting better but almost in secret. You have to dig
around to find what's new and better. Like changing the program title
bar color from that horrid white. Took out the ability then put it back
in. Why didn't they just ask first? Or why even contemplate changing
that? White? Uh, white?

It's almost as if the MS Devs like being called idiots and cursed at. Geez.

Lemme see, an MS Windows dev meeting ...

"Let's make all the title bars white!"

"Why?"

"Because we can!"

"Um, what if people don't like it?"

"What!? Of course they will!!!"

"Why?"

"I don't care!"

Getting Windows 8 for $40 and now Windows 10 for free. Easy to
understand why, because Microsoft is under humongous reverse pressure
from ultraportable PCs and their operating systems. But I have a
feeling it's going to effect more than the price of Windows.

This reminds me of the big Microsoft antitrust trial prior to 2000.
That's when Windows XP came out and ended the crappy consumer
versions of Windows power users had to restart several times during
the day. This huge pressure on Microsoft could result in another
major improvement of quality. No more sitting on its hands, at least
for a while.

Time to upgrade. For me, much earlier than usual. I didn't even use
Windows Vista or Windows 7.

You missed out on W7. Great OS. So far I'm unimpressed by W10 by
comparison. It's getting better but almost in secret. You have to dig
around to find what's new and better. Like changing the program title
bar color from that horrid white. Took out the ability then put it
back in. Why didn't they just ask first? Or why even contemplate
changing that? White? Uh, white?

I already expounded on the look and feel problem, in another post. Yes,
it seems to be getting worse. But the destruction of Windows' look and
feel was already happening by Windows 7. The inability to grab only a
sliver of the window border in the upper right-hand area was a
continuation from Windows Vista. And, oddly, Microsoft decided that when
a window is maximized and there's no need to grab a window border, we
shouldn't be able to slap the pointer against the right-hand side and
click the scrollbar without looking. Instead, we should have to aim for
the scrollbar. But that one might have been part of the works even as
soon as Windows XP.

I look forward to them doing an about-face on the desktop look and feel
problem. I do think it's an indicator, a good sign of whether they get
it or not. If they don't get it soon, they probably will get smushed.

But don't be surprised if some federal judges come to their rescue.

I'm still on WinXPsp2. I have never performed a single upgrade
and have no plans to upgrade until the hardware dies.

Why not service pack 3? And why are you here?

Admittedly, Windows XP was the first and apparently last Microsoft
Windows that took Windows seriously. But hopefully that will
change.

You're ignoring Windows 7 which was a masterpiece and Windows 10
which, according to a list published today, is the version of Windows
with the least vulnerabilities. It fares better than OS X, iOS, Ubuntu
Linux, openSUSE, Debian Linux and every other version of Windows. It's
kind of hard to acknowledge that and claim that it isn't "serious."

Taking a look at Windows 10... I am impressed that Microsoft is
making Windows look worse than ever before. Now there are even
fewer theme customization options than there were in Windows
8/7/Vista. Windows borders look like ****. Fortunately, if you are
using a high contrast color scheme, you can repair most of the
damage simply by copying the Colors folder from the Windows 8
registry. But forget about gradient title bars.

Gradient title bars are seriously out of style. If you like that sort
of thing, you can use GNU/Linux though: they have a number of window
decorations that are embarrassingly ugly in KDE and GNOME.

Strangely, nowadays Microsoft apparently thinks that a cool desktop
background picture is all it takes to make Windows look okay.
Microsoft should change the name to something other than "Windows"
if it's going to destroy the look and feel of Windows. But
hopefully appearance customization of the desktop will come back to
Microsoft as it struggles for its life against ultraportable PCs.
Or maybe it will just die. Time will tell.

Windows is whatever Microsoft wants it to be. As a mere user, you have
no say as to what the corporation decides to do with it. You can moan
and bitch all that you want but they are doing what they believe is
best for the users knowing very well that they will alienate some of
the users who each have a varying definition of what a "pure" Windows
is supposed to be. You're free to use GNU/Linux and to customize your
desktop to whatever look and operation you believe is most appropriate
but your comments about Windows, so far, are completely off the mark.

Next up, I will see what Microsoft has done for speech recognition
in Windows. Google has already made their speech recognition
practically on par with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, at least for
short phrase dictation. If Microsoft wants to combat ultraportable
PCs, it's going to have to improve Windows for desktop users. There
are plenty of innovations Microsoft should have been doing all
along. They are already happening on ultraportable PCs. If
Microsoft doesn't see those things by now, it's dead.

People have been claiming that Microsoft is dead since Windows 1.0.
Meanwhile, it has only grown since then and become increasingly
influential. With Jobs, it was about domination and we can argue that
the company was against standards and all about forcing unwelcome
technologies down our throats. Under Ballmer, there was a greater
acceptance of open standards and more response to what users truly
wanted. With Nadella, Microsoft has actually overtaken Apple when it
comes to innovation (see Hololens and the SurfaceBook as excellent
examples). You seem to have closed your eyes to reality and made up an
entirely new one.

It's almost as if the MS Devs like being called idiots and cursed
at. Geez.

Lemme see, an MS Windows dev meeting ...

"Let's make all the title bars white!"

"Why?"

"Because we can!"

"Um, what if people don't like it?"

"What!? Of course they will!!!"

"Why?"

"I don't care!"

I'll be the first one to admit that Microsoft removed certain
personalization options in Windows, however I wonder how Microsoft's
decision to turn all title bars white is any different from Apple's
decision to make their operating system look a certain way regardless
of what the user desires. We probably shouldn't be comparing to Apple
as a way of apologizing for what Microsoft did but clearly, it isn't
the only one doing such things.

And then they are adding them again. My Win10 title bars are dark blue,
like the accent color I chose in PC Settings - Personalization.
