Default Default programs

I saw this on a Windows mailing list, but no one has responded.

"I want to set a default program that is installed but not listed
(Cyberfox).

"How do I add it to the list?"

Thanks.

"If the program you want to use doesn’t appear on the list, click “more
apps” to see all the programs that can handle that file type. If the
program still doesn’t show up, click “look for another app on this PC”
to select it manually using File Explorer."

Worth a try!

Does this work for Win 8.x?

The instructions for Win 8.x are very similar to the Windows 10
instructions I pointed you to. Let's start again!

I started with a Google search for
"how to set default programs in windows 8.1"

You can view the windows.microsoft.com instructions for Win 8.1 at

Alek,

I have just installed Cyberfox on my Win10 PC and that proved to be a
bit of a pain to set as a default program - but, I got there in the
end.

Navigate to Default Programs:
Control Panel, then (if using View by: Category ) click Programs,
then Default Programs.

OR

Control Panel, then (if using View by: Small icons ) click Default
Programs.

The Default Programs panel will give you 4 choices. Choose the 2nd
option "Associate a file type or protocol with a program".

Now you should have a list of Extensions.

Scroll down to "HTML".

Double click the program listed under "Current Default" for HTML.
You should now get a list of programs which process HTML files.
Hopefully, Cyberfox will be in this list. (It was on my PC after I
chose the 2nd option and proceeded as described above).

(At this point I restarted my PC. I don't know if this was necessary
or not - just trying to be safe or something!)

Now you should get a chance to start again, this time selecting the
1st option "Set your default programs".

It was not.

The procedure at the top seems to work in every case. The only problem
occurs if Windows does not offer to let you look for another app on this PC!

Thanks.

If I navigate to Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/Default
Programs/"Associate a file type or protocol..." I can check which
Extensions are associated with my browser - which is Pale Moon.

Below is a list of these Extensions and associations on my PC:

Name Description Current Default

..htm Pale Moon HTML Document Pale Moon web browser
..html Pale Moon HTML Document Pale Moon web browser
..shtml Pale Moon HTML Document Pale Moon web browser
..xht Pale Moon HTML Document Pale Moon web browser
..xhtml Pale Moon HTML Document Pale Moon web browser

FTP URL:File Transfer Protocol Pale Moon web browser
HTTP URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol Pale Moon web browser
HTTPS URL:URL:File Transfer Protocol
with Privacy Pale Moon web browser
If you wish, you can do a similar check on your PC.

Under "Name" there are two headings: "Extensions", "Protocols".
Therefore, there are 2 lists - one after the other.

In the listing above there are 5 Extensions and 3 Protocols which are
associated with Pale Moon. YMMV on your PC.

If you do check your PC, clicking on "Current Default" will sort that
list of apps in alphabetical order.
