Default How to obtain Microsoft Windows 8, Dell Drivers, and MicrosoftOffice 2010 for free

For Microsoft Office, they told me to download the disks from:
http://office.microsoft.com/backup
Here, you enter your 25-digit product key & can order disks ($13)
or download the installation files yourself.

UPDATE:
I offered to help a friend backup her MS Office installation
for her and the kids, and, in doing so, I just tried to download
Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, and 2010, and got *different* results
for each.

1. Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 (942 MB):
I had to create an MS Outlook email address to access the download.
Since her MS Office 2010 was pre-installed on a new PC; I was able
to download the file (and was told not to change the file name,
which came over as "X17-75058.exe").

Weirdly, even though I had entered in her original 25-character
product key, they gave us a *new* 25-character product key, which
they called an FPP.

Q: Does anyone know what an FPP is & should we archive that and the
original product key or just the FPP?

2. Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 (311 MB):
When I entered her original product key, I was not given any option
to order a "backup DVD". I was only allowed to download the file.

This time we were given the *same* 25-character product key as the
original product key, but they also called it an FPP; and we were
(again) told *not* to change the file name, which came over as:
"X16-69408.exe".

Q: Does anyone know why you can't change the file name?
(do you think it matters at installation time?)

3. MS Office Standard Edition 2003 for Students and Teachers (217 MB):
For some reason, this was *not* available for download when I entered
in the product key into the forma at:
http://office.microsoft.com/backup

We were forced to obtain the download using the URL located he
http://preview.tinyurl.com/m9ggpua
Which pointed to this URL:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...9-fc9dd6e9225a
Which pointed to this URL:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo.../OfficeSTD.exe

Q: Does anyone know why the "normal" download page won't work for
Microsoft Office 2003 (but works for 2007 & 2010)?

Hi BD,
I think, in your overly suspicious search for a rat, you missed
the entire point!

All the links provided are to Microsoft web servers (check them out).
So, if you suspect anything, you must be suspecting Microsoft themselves.

To reiterate, the point clearly is to download *from Microsoft*
the desired Microsoft Office versions:
1. Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 (942 MB)
2. Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 (311 MB):
3. MS Office Standard Edition 2003 for Students and Teachers (217 MB)

As stated, for some unknown reason, the last download was not
located at the *standard* Microsoft location:
http://office.microsoft.com/backup

So, I search the USENET archives for a thread titled:
Does a freeware program exist to "save" Microsoft Office 2003?
And, in that thread, we find this link from *Microsoft* support:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...9-fc9dd6e9225a
All we did was download the URL that is in *that* thread, which
points to an executable which *is* located on a Microsoft server:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo.../OfficeSTD.exe

However, the following three questions were asked in my post
(which, since you're so suspicious, you probably know the answer
to, so please let us know what you seem to know):

Q: Does anyone know why the "normal" download page won't work for
Microsoft Office 2003 (but works for 2007 & 2010)?

Q: Does anyone know why you can't change the file name?
(do you think "X16-69408.exe" matters at installation time?)

Q: Does anyone know what an FPP is & should we archive that and the
original product key or just the FPP (or just the product key)?

Why would you expect anything different? The URL pretty clearly shows
that you would be downloading OfficeSTD.exe (presumably, the Office
Standard installer) from download.microsoft.com... Why would that smell
like a rat to you?

You are the guru - answer Danny's question, damn it!

AFAIK, one cannot download MS Office and then simply activate it with a
'key'. Do you think one can?

How does the effort compare to the effort of this thread?

Sounds like a no-brainer.

I've never tried it. My Vista machine had a trial preinstalled - and I
never used it. I got 'viewers' installed for reading the filetypes I
need to look at.

I 'assume' that there's no reason for it not to be possible. Why would
it care about anything but the key (and perhaps the installer
filename).

What I think one way or another is irrelevant. What is said online, in
another forum, is irrelevant. What is relevant is that the download
exists.

a 'key'. Do you think one can?

Like you, I have never claimed to be a guru.

True - but you are fairly knowledgeable! ;-)

Is what Dustin has now said correct - in *your* opinion?

I've never tried it. My Vista machine had a trial preinstalled - and I
never used it. I got 'viewers' installed for reading the filetypes I
need to look at.

I 'assume' that there's no reason for it not to be possible. Why would
it care about anything but the key (and perhaps the installer filename).

Do you think otherwise?

Default How to obtain Microsoft Windows 8, Dell Drivers, and Microsoft Office 2010 for free

Danny D. used his keyboard to write :

Q: Does anyone know what an FPP is & should we archive that and the
original product key or just the FPP?

The program file and the FPP key is equivalent to a boxed set from a
brick and mortar store.

Q: Does anyone know why you can't change the file name?

Because they told you not to?

(do you think it matters at installation time?)

Yes, I do, but I can't find any documentation that explains why. Maybe
the filename is coded to match with the e-mail address they had you use
- kind of a verification thingy? If you find out, I would be interested
in the documentation.
