Default Desktop Problems Following Reboot

Here is a problem that I hope someone will be able to help me with .
Earlier this eveining after installing a programme.Roxio's Video Wave
Movie Maker I rebooted as requested and when it restarted it went through
the usual motions, then the "welcome" screen and the desktop appeared but
it went no further -absolutely no icons are on the destop .I managed to
get in to Agent by going via Task Manager / New Task and opening my C
Drive and opening Internet Explorer which brought up my Internet
Connection box. So how do I get the icons restored ,guys .??? I am ,of
course ,using Windows XP

Please post back here with info if this helped or not.

There is a very good chance this is being caused by a virus.

Hi Chris ,Thx for your help and the links which I had a look at . I
couldnt see the file explore or explorer.exe mentioned as possibly being
in C:\windows\System 32 but what appears to have solved the problem is
going in to Task Manager and stopping explorer.exe and a few minutes after
all the icons/taskbar and start menu appeared .Hope they stay next time I
reboot. At least I now know how to get connected and get in to mail,ng's
etc even if the route is rather tortuous .

Any idea what might have caused this ??

When searching around I did find something . I noticed that when I
rebooted yesterday a new screen came up which showed my name on the screen
as account holder and I had to click that before it went on to the
desktop. I went in to Control Panel/User Accounts and as well as my own
account and an unused guest account there was another one and I did not
recognise the name used, unless it was the guy who built the pc so I
deleted it anyway.
thx again
Stuart
