Default Computer keeps rebooting without fully loading windows XP

Help,
I think my stepson has gotten a virus, worm, or whatever. When you turn on
the computer, it starts to load and when it gets to the windows logon page,
it reboots itself. Is there a way to fix this, or will he need a new
computer?

PeggyH,

Try booting the system to Safe Mode. Click the power button and
repeatedly tap the F8 key to reach Safe Mode. If you do not do so, the
system will attempt to reboot to normal Windows mode and restart again.

IF you can get the system started in Safe Mode, ask your stepson if he
installed any new programs or hardware recently. Incompatible hardware
can cause the behavior you're seeing. If the issue stems from recently
installed hardware or drivers for hardware, you'll need to open Device
Manager and Roll Back the driver or, for recently installed Hardware,
uninstall it.

If you find it's none of the above, then it is most likely malware
related. You will need to download an anti-malware tool that will
neutralize the malware presently infesting the system.

The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and Stinger can sometimes
accomplish this. Both can fit on a floppy disk, but not on the same one
due to floppy size limitations.
Then you can fully clean the system once it will stay booted up.

Great advice and I just want to add for Peggy that if Safe Mode does not
work also try last known good configuration option that you also see when
using F8 to see the alternate startup menu. More than likely it will not
work but your never know. It mainly works when the problem is driver related
and not from Malware problems. --- Steve
