Default Network cable unplugged

Have you tried plugging the NIC into a different port using one of the other
cables? Does it work then?

This would appear to be a simple problem with a simple
solution but I have not been able to figure it out.

I am trying to connect a Win XP Pro machine in a 5-
computer P2P-network sharing Internet through a router
using IDSL service. All other 4 computers work fine (have
Internet, can share files and printers), but the fifth one
has given many problems. First, I couldn't renew the IP
address with the DHCP server. I am not convinced that
that problem is resolved yet, but now another problem came
up that is equally perplexing.

So far I:

updated the NIC drivers from RealTek
tried to manually assign an IP address
ran "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt"
ping'ed the loopback address (successfully)
ping'ed the localhost (successfully, before "network cable
is uplugged" message appeared)
checked the cable connections (there is a green light on
the port that the computer is connected to)
used a different patch cable
disabled McAfee virus-scan
verified there is no firewall connected on said computer

Can anyone explain why I would receive "network cable is
unplugged" for the LAN adapter icon in My Network
Connections? Furthermore, once the cable is connected,
why I can't "Repair" the LAN connection and retrieve an IP
address from the DHCP server. The IDSL service provider
said that the router's table is configured properly. All
other 4 computers can attain an IP address from the DHCP
server.

Cheers,

Mike B.
