Default Windows update help please

I am getting the message below when trying to connect to
Windows Update.

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that
helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system
in order to use Windows Update."

It appears it is not recognising that I have Windows XP.
I have reinstalled XP but it made no difference.
Have also run a virus check - all OK.

Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thank you.
John
