Go into msconfig and uncheck the items one at a time until you find
the offending program. It's basic troubleshooting. Can be a bit

winlogon.exe is supposed to live in \windows\system32\
and there may be a copy in windows\system32\dllcache

Perhaps this is a symptom of a previous virus.

Got it!!
I found it in msconfig under start-yp and unchecked it.
I guess I could also delete the key in the registry but I wasn't sure if it
was safe or not.
I might wait a while to see if anything weird and if all smooth, I'lldelete

Sorry yea, I should have been more clear, its under startup tab. Its safe to
tick / untick anything in there as nothing in there is essential, and can be
changed back if you prefer.
removing the entry from the registry isn't that important as long as its now
inactive.

No worries. Thanks a lot for the suggestions.
Anyway, my feeling is that it got installed there by a virus or spyware
requesting this file at start-up, makes sense....?

Default winlogon.exe file

nah, winlogon isn't started like that it is the remnant of the virus, run
msconfig and find the entry for winlogon.exe unticjk it and you'll be away
laffing.

Hi,
I have an error message every time that I boot my computer WIN XP Pro
Edition that the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\services\winlogon.exe is

missing
as requested in registry.
How can I fix this?
I do not know if it is because of a virus that I deleted OR per haps I
accidentally deleted that file

(C:\WINDOWS\system32\services\winlogon.exe).
Can I reinstall that file or find what is asking for this file in

registry,
etc.??
I have tried eveything now for one month but no success.....
Tx for your help.

winlogon.exe is supposed to live in \windows\system32\
and there may be a copy in windows\system32\dllcache

Perhaps this is a symptom of a previous virus.

Did you look for the file in C:\Windows\System32 Folder? If it's
not there and if you have a WinXP CD
Go to StartRun type: msconfig Click on "Expand File" in lower
Right and then follow the Instructions.
