Default Home Network Conflict

I have been atttempting to setup a home network with a comast dsl modem and a
dlink d614 router. The cable modem is connected directly to my computer and
I want to use the rounter only for the network. I have used the connection
wizard to setup a network where each compter on network has its own internet
conection and the setup completes its cycle. Howver when I enable the
ethernet network connection (which works) direct dsl cable connection through
my USB port stops working - as soon as the netwiork connection is disable -
the internet connection works again.

ps I am not trying to share this dsl internet connection

Is this a DSL router or a cable router and is it a DSL modem or cable modem,
maybe you have an equipment mismatch? Why not use the router as intended
(between the ??? modem and your computer)?

I would strongly recommend that you not use a usb port. Buy a network adapter
for 20 bucks and all your problems may be solved.
