Default workgroup name reverts to mshome

new XP home machine's workgroup name refuses to hold on new
setting; oddly it will stay for a re-boot or two, and then returns to
"mshome"
Friend suspects a break in; I see no signs of this ; is this a bug or a
security breach ?

I've been overposting this, as I'm getting a bit frustrated ...nothing on
Google and no replies as yet ....any thought welcome..remove nework settings
and reinstall ? Try from a safe boot ?
