Lynn This is a non story as far as I'm concerned because the HD size & price per GB is so affordable these days that most people are least concerned about HD space requirements. DELL has machines costing £300 that has 2TB disk space already so what is the problem Lynn Troll? If we were talking about minimum RAM requirement then people might be alarmed because some of the users here are still using Windows 7 and sometimes next year they will require to install Windows 10 on their existing machine if it meets the "basic" requirements. People should make provision to have at least 8GB RAM to use Windows 10 comfortably. anything less is asking for frustration!!! and this might affect their man-hood!!!!! -- With over 950 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |

In my experience, the storage requirement for Winders rises 5 to 10 GB each year as it scatters files into every nook and cranny of the file system. Lynn Au contraire. The storage requirements are relatively consistent. About 10GB give-or-take for a clean install, from Vista onwards. Say somewhere between 10-12GB, once you crank down the Pagefile and turn off Hibernation. Where the problem lies, is the storage of Windows.old while the install is happening. If you use Cleanmgr.exe afterwards, it'll tell you that Windows.old is around 20GB (contains backup copies of many Windows Updates). And that's going to be deleted in 10 days, whether you like it or not. I usually accelerate the deletion of that area, since I have a backup to use if the Upgrade Install goes wrong. "Revert" is too slow to be used for the purpose. The only gate right now on 1904, is the USB drive re-lettering issue, which prevents automatic Upgrade on machines with USB keys sticking out the back. On a tablet, extending the storage space using USB sticks, was the method chosen to extend the storage space enough, to solve the "hump" in install size caused by Windows.old. Windows.old only exists to support "Revert" after an Upgrade. Say your favorite Win32 application didn't work, and you had to get your job done, you could select Revert and Windows.old would blow away Windows. And the previous release (1809) would again be running the machine. If it wasn't for that feature, and the Windows.old that sticks around for 10 days (or less), the "peak" storage requirement would be reasonable. These "reference images" I keep, have the hiberation file turned off (because it's a function of the amount of RAM the user has). And the pagefile is similarly shrunk down, not as far as it will go, but all the images should have the pagefile set to 1GB. It's the same size I use for Linux swap partition (i.e. just enough to survive a mis-configured garbage collector). 05/27/2018 01:24 AM 8,775,759,296 10240.vhd 05/27/2018 01:39 AM 9,034,771,968 10586.vhd 02/07/2018 12:10 AM 10,083,603,968 14393.vhd 02/07/2018 12:20 AM 9,452,207,104 15063.vhd 02/07/2018 12:30 AM 9,561,285,632 16299.vhd 05/26/2018 01:35 AM 9,611,629,568 17034.vhd So the disk size would go like this. Windows plus certain program files materials 20GB Installation starts. 10GB to 12GB new material 32GB peak usage, during install Remove Windows.old after install done 12GB (to cover variations) Windows Updates... ...20GB bloats as time passes That would be the cycle every six months or so. The last time I checked (it's been a while), the installer likes to see "3GB of slack". Thus the math works out to around 35GB minimum, unless something happens to the contrary. The tablet method used to use the "compressed-WIM plus overlay file system", but since I don't own such devices, I haven't kept track of the new scheme they're using. It doesn't have to be the same as the desktop numbers I quote above. Technically, the smallest a new Windows core could be, would be around 5GB or so (i.e. nothing but a compressed-WIM). What they're actually doing these days on tablets, nobody has given a breakdown on the space in use. Microsoft is working in the lab, on a "16GB eMMC" version of Windows 10, a kind of Windows 10 Lite. Which I don't think is such a good idea, but I would guess this is part of the Windows 10 battle plan against Chromebooks. There's a good chance this will be a hobbled version that doesn't run Win32 apps or something. I'm not aware of this being in the field yet, so we could get a review of how horrible it is. Paul |

Do you really think that "virtual machines" are not used for real serious work? Of course. That's how you get a wide range of softwares on a given box. I was using SoftWindows on a Unix boxen at work, and that was my first VM. And the boss would go for these, because it helped meet the "don't allow employees to gather a ton of computers in their office space" rule. Part of the reason for rules like that, was avoiding electrical overloads (and needing to add air conditioning capacity - it could cost your department $10K to add additional cooling to a lab environment for example, just for power dissipation reasons.). Our buildings were heated in winter, mainly just from the amount of AC Power in usage. You can do that in office buildings. Ever since that introduction to VMs, I've had them on every computer I've owned since. Paul |

Using two USB sticks, one as the "storage area", one with the 1809 image on it, might be another way to do it. MediaCreationTool should have an option to directly make a USB stick for you. Maybe when that runs and does an Upgrade Advisor check, it will be able to tell you why the upgrade is blocked (or not). Paul |

It's the dumb reservation method they dreamed up. It's like buying size 13 shoes for a size 10 foot. Obviously they're "buttering up" the ecosystem for a Lite version of the OS.
