I carried out your instructions but I still ended with the message "Can't
access the Windows management Instrumentation Software. Windows
management may be moved or missing"

Try he http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm

John

Many thanks for your help[
I downloaded the utility and read the instructions but when I tried to open
the utility I was met by a series of notes with instructions some of the
them saying certain files could not be found. By this time I realised I was
out of my depth and abandoned my effort

Forget about the utility, it's very difficult to use and you need
advanced Windows skills to decipher the messages that it will give you.
Instead just try the other suggested fix, as explained on the web page
try this:

1- Click Start, Run and type the following command:

rundll32 wbemupgd, UpgradeRepository

2- Re-register the WMI components, run the following commands at the
command prompt:

* cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem
* for %i in (*.dll) do RegSvr32 -s %i
* for %i in (*.exe) do %i /RegServer

(To avoid errors you can just copy and paste to the Run box or command
prompt.)

If this doesn't fix WMI then try the Comprehensive rebuild method as
explained at the end of the web page. Pay attention the the Important
note about the service pack level, if your Windows installation is at
SP3 you need to use a Windows XP CD slipstreamed to SP3 or you need to
point to the Service Pack 3 folder when prompted.

Good luck, if this doesn't work you are probably looking at a Windows
repair install (in-place upgrade) to repair WMI.

Default Virtual memory minimum too low

Thanks for your reply
I have 512 MB RAM
My min setting is 768 MB and Max is 1536 MB
Which is approx 1.5 and 3 times the RAM size as recommended
Should I change these?
Blair

Yes. You should be using System Managed Size in your case. The 1.5/3
figures are myths and only applicable at certain points of disk space and
pagefile usage.

I had a suspicion that more RAM was required
My PC is a Dell Desktop 1100 and has 512MB RAM
Would it be worth increasing it to 1GB and is it practical?
Blair

It's definitely practical and definitely worth it. The optimal RAM would be
2 Gig; larger than that and your'e running into the point of diminishing
returns. Most users with 3 Gig RAM would likely not see the pagefile being
used at all except for the requisite space for data dumps. Crucial.com is
one of the best places to dig into things like this, IMO. They'll even look
at what RAM you currently have and suggest what you should be able to use.

HTH,

Add more RAM. What is your computer make and model?

Changing to a system managed pagefile may eliminate the virtual
memory messages but will not help performance as you have
insufficient RAM. --

Hope this helps.

Do you have plenty of free disk space? You can set a larger maximum
pagefile but it is normally better to add RAM. Accessing RAM is
quicker than accessing the pagefile.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?
