USB3.1 in Windows10
I read this will be built in. Will one need new hardware as well?
Peter. And will it be faster? |

USB3.1 in Windows10

New chip, some sorta new driver (needs to know rates, to do planning and such). Older OSes will require the vendor of the hardware kit (PCI Express board), to provide a Windows 7 driver. No idea whether WinXP would be supported when USB3.1 hardware becomes more common-place. You don't really need USB 3.1, so it is more for bragging. When other hardware catches up, it may be more useful. ******* A separate issue, is the Type C connector. While it will be released at roughly the same time, it is not limited to USB 3.1. During the transition, this will just make more of a mess of the I/O plate area (at least three different connectors, USB2 connectors, USB3 connectors, and one Type C connector for you to play with). It's hard to say what sort of evolution plan will exist for the connectors over the next five years. Occasionally, I still need a USB2 connector (which with older OSes, has an actual working driver on boot). I've already experienced issues on the new computer, where newer USB3 connectors aren't getting recognized. For example, over the last few days, I've been using s "serial mouse" on the test machine, just so I can click stuff :-) (Two mice are connected, and if the USB one, the red light has gone off, I just reach for the serial mouse.) I'm sure glad I bought that serial mouse for $5 when I found it at the computer store in the "delete bin". Paul |

Support for it will be built-in, but it obviously requires new hardware the same way you needed new USB 3.0 hardware to take advantage of IT. It uses a different connector so it won't be backwards compatible with previous versions of USB as far as I know. -- Slimer Encrypt. It would be interesting to check the Win10 Preview, for evidence of support for 3.1. See if it's mentioned inside any INF files. Paul |

Yousuf, I had to replace a motherboard in my PC just a few weeks ago and opted for an ASUS Z97 Deluxe w/USB 3.1. Your question may be answered with this picture - http://tinypic.com/r/2zrdhcm/8 |

I have loved USB3, with the exception of certain USB2 devices that won't work with it, such as APC's data cable |
