Transfer of email on Vista hard drive to new W8 PC
My neighbour's Vista PC packed up, and he bought a new W8.1 machine.
The place that supplied it was supposed to have transferred over all the stuff that was on the Vista PC, but there is no working email. For this and for other reasons, he asked me if I could have a quick look at things, and try and sort it out. He has a 16GB memory stick, which is believed to have the transfer data on it. However, he also has the original Vista hard drive, which is OK (it wasn't the cause of the failure). So instead of the trying to use the memory stick, would it be possible to use a USB adapter on the hard drive, and transfer the Vista email directly to the W8 PC? [I think it was either Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail, and that there are three password-protected accounts.] Also, I'm confused about which email client you're supposed to use with W8. Google brings up loads of information - much of which is contradictory. So far, I haven't tried the W8 Outlook app, and personally I think they might be better off using something 'sensible' like Thunderbird. So, if I installed Thunderbird, could I assess the Vista disk directly, and export the email files to the W8 PC (of course, then import them into Thunderbird)? -- Ian |

Transfer of email on Vista hard drive to new W8 PC

writes If the old machine was using Thunderbird it would be possible to use Thunderbird on the new machine and use the entire old profile. Unfortunately, it's not. It'll be either Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail. Moving Thunderbird from one PC to another is easy if the donor is up and running, when the 'brainless' way it to use Mozbackup. Failing that, it'll mean delving into where the profiles are kept - and they won't be in form suitable a form for a recipient non-Mozilla email program to accept. It's also easy to export WM and WLM for importation (either to WM or WLM, or to several other email/newsgroup clients - but, of course, the donor has to be up and running. I've never done it the 'hard way' - by transferring .eml files (or whatever form they are in). I suppose I'll have a play and see what's possible. -- Ian |

If the hard drive on his old computer is good, do him a favor and get a USB enclosure for it. The enclosure will provide a good external drive back up for his main computer. First he can use it as it comes from the old computer to retrieve all of his data. After a couple of months and he is sure he has everything on the new computer, he can reformat the now external drive and use it as a backup to his main computer. |

I had already resumed my delving, and I saw that the six mail folders in the WLM 'Storage Folders' folder are dated Aug 2015. In WM, they are in the 'Local Folders' folder, and they are dated Nov 2009. [Maybe a helpful Windows Vista 'update' at some time changed my neighbour's WM to WLM? I wonder if they were thereafter able to access the old emails?]. There are loads and loads of the older WM .eml emails, so I guess I should include these in the transfer. As I said, it's easy to import .emls into Thunderbird. Although I've done WLM to TB, haven't tried importing into WLM. For practice, I was going to install WLM on this XP machine, but it won't (even with a version that says it will work on XP). However, I have a W7 laptop with WLM (although I don't use it), so I will try that. I've also found a website with a completely non-rambling and unambiguous procedure, and it seems that you can simply copy over the whole of the old PC WLM folder, and run new PC WLM Import function. http://bit.ly/1N3l4zg While familiar with WLM, WM for mail and news and SeaMonkey only for news I don't use TBird for email so others will have to step in and provide assistance on importing and possible related issues. The main problem with WM and/or WLM is that it doesn't show proper and quotes for the mail or newsgroup post you're replying to. What was wrong with good old Outlook Express?! Good luck. Thanks! -- |

The main problem with WM and/or WLM is that it doesn't show proper and quotes for the mail or newsgroup post you're replying to. What was wrong with good old Outlook Express?! Good luck. Thanks! Since the device you noted earlier is a replacement for 'the neighbour's Vista PC' and so far indicates that he was using WM (at once) and later WLM based on the date of the email messages (.eml) you've found....it would seem that the best choice would be to remain consistent with your neighbor's past usage pattern rather than ask then to adapt to a new operating system (8.1) and a new email client. Additionally, if the neighbor doesn't use newsgroups (you've yet to mention that they do) then the quoting in any mail/news client (especially if WLM was the last client) may be someone else's preference on what they would do, but once again not the 'neighbor' As you've already read quite a few respondents on what email client should or shouldn't be used...but not a single one of those was your neighbor unless you are the 'neighbor' Just my 2 cents. -- ....winston msft mvp consumer apps |

Well ........ Yesterday, I spent quite some time at my neighbour's simply trying to get either WLM or WM to work. Neither did. After installing WLM, simply nothing happened. Attempts to install WM failed because "something was preventing it from being installed". There was an error message saying that the Windows firewall had to be turned on. It was on - but toggling it didn't help. They have McAffee AV, so I disabled it, and tried again - and still no go. After returning home, I did some more Googling on the problems of Windows 8.* email. It's pretty obvious that a heck of a lot of W8 people are having problems with W(L)M, so I decided that the most obvious thing was to abandon it, and use something which DOES work. My neighbour isn't that bothered provided it works, so we agreed that I should try to install Thunderbird. Anyway, thanks to all for their help and suggestions. It's been an interesting (if unproductive) exercise. As I said to my neighbour, "If nothing else, it's a challenge!" -- Ian |

You probably received a message that .NET 2 and/or 3 needed to be present on 8.1 - enable the feature in 8.1 Programs and Features/Turn Windows features on or off. If you were trying to install WLM 2009 on 8.1 - don't. For 8.1 install WLM 2012 and only 2012. -- ....winston msft mvp consumer apps |

No. The error code simply referred to the Windows firewall needing to be on - which it was. Turning it off then on made no difference (even with rebooting each time). As the W8.1 PC is only a few weeks old, I presume it will have received all the latest automatic updates - including those required for upgrading to W10! [But I realise it may not have got optional updates.] If you were trying to install WLM 2009 on 8.1 - don't. For 8.1 install WLM 2012 and only 2012. It certainly wasn't 2009. I think it was 2012. To be honest, while these things are a challenge, I think I've spent enough time on trying to get a (any) Windows mail/news client working on W8.1 - in the hope that it might eventually work provided it's exactly the right version, that the PC has certain specific optional updates installed, and whether there's a R in the month and a following wind. [Sorry for the rather jaundiced view of things!] Instead, I've been configuring Thunderbird Portable according to my neighbour's ISP setup requirements, and I've transferred his WM and WLM emails to it. Hopefully, when I plug the memory stick into his PC, it should run normally, and it will only require the addition of his password to again get access his online emails. If that works, it's probably best to convert Thunderbird to the install version. Anyway, again thanks for all the advice. It's all good fun, but I think I'll try to avoid the problems of W8 (and above) for as long as possible! -- Ian |
