I have a dinosaur Compaq Presario and a Viewsonic monitor. I am not
technically inclined and I am need help PLEASE.

I have sporadic problems with getting my monitor to start. A) Light
is on, but nothing on the screen. I have to click the button several
times before I see anything. B) Last week all I saw on the screen were
the icons but a white background. Someone has suggested that it may be a
problem with my video card. Is there any safe 'free' on line site where
I can check my video card?

If I need a new video card, can I who is NOT TECHNICALLY inclined
installl this by myself. I am not cheap, but just cannot afford to
bring this to the shop or buy a new computer.

Thanks!

Just a couple of thoughts.....

Does the monitor finally start and work correctly?

If..yes...I think your monitor is probably going bad.

You could go to Device Manager and check on
your video card but if that was the problem I don't
think the issue would be intermittent.

Hi 2androse

Did you try swapping the monitor before conclude that the problem lies with
the graphic card?

Also it would help if you could give us the exact make and model of your
compaq rig.

Regards
