Avast free

Just wondering what free antivirus people are running here. I have been
running Avast Free for years but it is really getting to be a pain with
it's constant program updates (not definition updates) Personally I
think the older interface was better.Right now I have version
2014.9.0.2013 and it is constantly nagging about updating the program. I
know it is a highly rated one but maybe there is something out there
that people like better?

I don't know where you are but if you have a UK account with Barclays
you get a free three user subscription to Kaspersky Internet Security
each year.

I suspect other banks will do something similar.

It seems to run just fine for me with automatic updates of virus
definitions and no updates of program.

think the older interface was better.

You act as if you daily open the UI. I just install it and then let it
run. I don't really care about the UI, so why should you?

I also have that setting but lately have been getting nagged about
program updates. My fault for allowing it to auto update for a long
time. Now that I changed that setting it has become a nag.

Not arguing your point at all but since I am on this machine daily and
it tells me daily about updates with balloon notifications than that is
what I would call nagging. As for the interface well the older one did
not have things like "grimefighter" and "software updater" etc. Once
again I say that it was my fault for allowing it but.... I think it is
the dumbing down of programs that I dislike.

The latest program update ends with 2016.
Go to the settings for Update and under the Programs update settings, select
'manual'.
If you don't want to be bothered by those screen nags at all, 'one' way is
to just rt click on the taskbar icon and select 'Silent Gaming Mode'.
There are other ways, but this is a simple easy way. You have to do it after
every boot, but then it stays that way until the next boot.
I also disable Grimefighter and Software Updater.
I think the free Avast is excellent, overall. Just take the time to go
through all the options available in Avast.
I also don’t use the Web Shield or the Mail Shield. Using the whole Web
shield program, seems to slow down my web browsing.
Use what you want.

You won't see any pop-ups after you check this option.

You can still remove all those unwanted Tools.

Uninstall/Change Change

I haven't found any free anti-virus I like better than Avast. I find
the advertising tolerable. Despite your implication, it really doesn't
update the program very often. There was a major one in February, and
it had been a few months since the previous one, I think.

because no one has mentioned anything different as per my first question.

I haven't found any free anti-virus I like better than Avast. I find
the advertising tolerable. Despite your implication, it really doesn't
update the program very often. There was a major one in February, and

Maybe the word "constant" was used wrongly.. What I meant was after I
chose not to update the program anymore I was badgered repeatedly to do
so (as in every time I brought it out of sleep mode) I have taken the
advice of others to make some changes to the settings but was still
wondering about other antivirus program advice.

I use Avira, but so what? Once you get Avast tamed, I think you'll be fine.

I use McAfee LiveSafe - Internet Security and it is free for me because
my new DELL Laptop came with 12 months free subscription. Also, I am
allowed to install this on any ther devices I own such as my Desktop and
other laptops in the family. I love it despite what people may think
about it here.

Very soon I will be joining PlusNet Broadband service and they also
provide McAfee LiveSafe Security free as part of the broadband service.

It is unlikely I will touch the free versions for a very long time. I
was using Microsoft Security Essential on my XP and Windows 7 but when I
got free McAfee I removed it and installed McAfee.

I will never touch Kaspersky for the mere reason that it is owned by a
Russian convicted hacker and fraudster. Mind boggles that a bank like
Barclays is using them for its customers.
